Alternative to Outlook or Outlook express?

So, do either 1 or 2?
I'd definitely go with 2 - nowadays, even home users often need to access/manage their email from a variety of locations, and webmail might not offer the flexibility and functionality of a "proper" email client (smartphones can also make good use of IMAP).

One slight gotcha if you're using Gmail with a desktop client via IMAP - the way Gmail's tags are translated into folders in the client app can be a bit counterintuitive at first, although it works well once you get the hang of it.

Incidentally, Outlook is painfully slow at synchronising IMAP folders if you retain a large number of stored emails on the server (from what I've seen, things haven't improved in Outlook 2010), so if you do go down that route it's another good reason to switch to an alternative such as Thunderbird, which seems to handle IMAP much better.
