Alternative to thermal paste?

Hey all

Tomorrow, i reckon i'm gonna clean out my Socket A cpu... But since i havnt removed the CPU for a while.. i've got a feeling that there will be little or no thermal paste left. Since i dont have any handy.. i was thinking if there was a household alternative ? :p

toothpaste is spose to be ok,
someone did a test i cant for the life of me remember the website im sure oyu could find it if you googled for it :)

i was actually thinking about doing the same with a old Duron 700 :)

Yeah seen that, water was the best, it had some drawbacks. Can't remember them right now. :(
 
right, i found that if you mix tooth paste and vaseline, it can be pretty good..

But apparently tooth paste corrodes.. so it would only be a temporary issue..

Yeah toothpaste will work but not for long, better off ordering some or going to a PC shop and buying some (any) until you can get arctic silver.
 
i do not think there is any household material suitable to be used for contact heat transfer that does not conduct. so i would nip out to some computer shop and find some cheap stuff.
 
Well i went to a local computer shop and managed to get some stuff for free... but i was just wondering how much better artic silver is? Will it reduce temps a lot?
 
temps will drop by a few degrees some cases people had the magic happen and god kissed their socket and it dropped by 10 degrees (not going to happen). You would on average see ~3-4 degrees difference at most, which is mostly found at full load. so upto you if u care, only real need is for oc'ing
