Alternatives to dayinsure?

I took my MR2 off the road for Winter with the intention of installing a monster ICE system and various mods. Over the Winter my insurance, MOT and tax has now lapsed (there was no point renewing them as I didn't plan to use the car until around April time). Now that I've pretty much decided to sell the car and buy a VX220 instead I need to somehow get an MOT and insurance for when potential buyers come to look. The MOT won't be a problem as I can just get my girlfriend to drive it to the garage (her insurance on the CTR covers that) but what can I do when it comes to actually taking buyers out on a test drive.

Dayinsure don't cover imports or modified so they're no good but does anyone know of any alternative companies that can do short term insurance. I guess I could just let the buyer do all the driving but I'd prefer to take them out first. I don't want my girlfriend taking out passengers as she can't drive the 2 properly, she'll forget that my rev limit is 1000rpm lower than hers ;)

Any ideas?

At the risk of being a pedant, are you sure thats true?

second car clauses usually require the car to be driven on someone elses policy to be insured itself.

Or at least i thought they did...

elephant allowed me to insure my second car for a month or 2, might be worth ringing them to see if yhey have temp policies?

:)

We've had this discussion before. It's one of those things that everyone believes to be the case because everyone says it is but if you actually read the terms on the policy then there's usually no such restriction.

Back on topic - try phoning your current insurers and explaining to them. They might let you add the MR2 as a temporary second car for a couple of weeks for a small fee. (I've done this before when I've had to borrow someones car for a short period whilst mine has been off the road)

Although legally I know I should get tax for the test drives I'm more concerned with just being insured.
I'll contact my old insurance company to see if they can do anything but I've got a feeling that they'll be expensive if they do (for 3 years they were cheap then suddenly they doubled their prices :()

Several friends have actually asked their insurance company about this (normally in connection with moving an uninsured car for a friend) and have been told that the car being driven must have its own policy by their own company.

The wording in most terms and conditions generally specifies that the facility to drive another car on your own policy is for emergency use only (ie incapacitated driver) not for general driving.

It would be worth seeing if you can get temporary 2nd car cover on your existing policy, this will also include a cover note so tax can be purchased.

I got my hands on 12 private car policy booklets from 12 insurers and found only one that mentioned this. I think the Insurer was Chaucer.

No private car policy states this. Of course - that may well be the intention -but not one policy states this in writing, therefore it's not actually the case. If the insurer gives you the doc extension - you are able to use it for non emergency uses.

I think I've found a solution. I will be insuring the VXT through Elephant so I thought I'd see if they would insure the MR2. In the past Elephant were always really expensive but I just did a quote and guess what? TPO on the MR2 is £287.65, bargain!!

So I think I'll just insure the MR2 TPO for now so I can get it taxed and MOT'd (and enjoy it for a little bit longer) then I'll just change the policy over to the VXT when the time comes (I guess there will be an admin fee, anyone know how much Elephant charge for changing cars during a policy?)

and of course cos your mates said so every insurance company in the country is the same right ?

we've had numerous arguments about this sort of thing before, remember the arguments with people yelling "insurance fraud" and the kid who drove his parents RX8 ?

it turned out in the end that certain (not all) insurance companies are fine about named drivers doing most of the driving.

just because you've asked your insurance company, doesnt mean every company in the land has the same t&cs

I dont remember them charging me anything. An extra tenner in the premium because the IG was 3 higher (even though it was a less powerfull car in my case  ) but they even refunded that later when I advised them it had a Cat 2 immobilser so cost me nothing :)

Elephant do a £12 charge.

imo a brilliant company, who LOVE performance cars (from my experience)
