Having our Soffits and Facias done and had our third quote today.

This company mentioned aluminium guttering as opposed to plastic. So was wondering if anyone has this already or if anyone has any input into the pros or cons.

From my understanding the pros are

  • Seamless, no joins except corners
  • hidden fixings

Appreciate any comments, so thanks.

I looked at this for self installation and on a like for like basis comparing aluminium to high capacity plastic it was easily 3 times the prices. I hate to think what it would cost for professional installation.

The pro of course is it is going to last 20+ years if properly installed and will be much more resistant to damage. The main reason we were considering it was because of the high cost of access if guttering were damaged in the future but the scaffold quotes weren't as bad as I thought so the risk to justify the cost diminished. We have a large roof area and are surrounded by many tall trees so the bonus of deeper and higher capacity gutter forms was a big plus but if you go beyond the DIY barns hi-cap plastic guttering is available and cost effective.

Personally I would consider it for a new build where I was going to be living for a long time but I'm not sure about the payback otherwise.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with Aluminium. Yes it may last 20+ years but for me, that will be longer than I would expect to be living in the same house for. Plastic lasts forever as it is, aluminium just seems like overkill.

If you were looking for a new house, and the listing said "aluminium guttering", would you think "yay" or "what's the point in that?"

I'm guessing for most it would be the latter.

It's a fortune and only really worth it on high life cycle buildings eg offices where replacement would be disruptive and expensive.

Deep flow plastic if anything

To quote the quoter today, they offer the same price for plastic as opposed to aluminium. Which would lead me to think its all marked up anyway.

TBH I didn't know they done aluminium so will keep my eyes peeled for seemless with hidden fixed installs.

Cheers for the replies.

Can't for the life if me think how they are offering plastic for the same price as aluminium. The plastic is either ridiculously overpriced but then why offer something at the same cost that is blatantly more just in materials.

Unless it's left over materials form another job .

100mm aluminium is 26.02 a meter
112mm upvc is 16.55 a meter

Aluminum fittings, stop ends, running outlets, angles etc are 2-3 times the price. Labour hours are pretty much the same 3m an hour

I paid £1400 for a large 4 bed detached house - soffits, facia (over clad as timber was fine) and all seamless aluminium. If you find the right people, it's not expensive. It will never leak again and you can have level gutters as they don't require a fall. Look amazing.

Hi Nathan, I don't suppose you got any pics of the work you had done?

Thanks

Is that an all in fitted price ?
I just paid £6.50 for a 4m length to diy.

Plastic should last 20 years tbh. The weak point is the rubber gaskets in the joins and corners, which would probably need replacing in that time. Mine are 20 years old and just starting to drip on the corners. Gaskets will be a couple of quid, or I could just buy new corners for like £3 a piece.

That's a good price. We are a 5 bed detached and so far been quoted £6500, £6000, £4500.

Waiting on one written quote from a recent visit and another company to turn up next week.

For guttering??? Christ, I need to setup this business if people are willing to pay this money.... for gutters.

Exactly.

I have asbestos gutters, need to go up and clean them out and maybe try to seal the joins or something as its full of vegetation and dripping all over the place. Not something I'm looking forward to!

we just recently had aluminium gutters fitted to our new build.
yes they are expensive but they look great, and in particular they really complement the house.
you can pick any colour, the seamless look is brilliant and when properly maintained they last a very long time.

I like em a lot!
