Am I daft for considering buying an AM4 PC now?

If you can pick up a AM4 board+cpu+memory+power supply for under £250 quid that could be a nice base system.

Maybe second hand with older generation hardware, but I'm looking at b550, 5700X/5800X, 32GB (preferably DDR4-3600), decent quality 700+W PSU, that sort of spec. If you can find me that for under £250, I'd thank you profusely :)

Just upgraded my own system.

There will always be better stuff in the future. There will always be a better deal than the one you buy. You can chase these gains for ever and ever. The question you should ask is whether the system you're buying provides the performance you want/need at the price you're willing to pay. If it does: great, buy it.

I'd keen an eye on the 2nd hand market, probably be some people offloading as they upgrade to the new platform.

Not many people selling whole PCs second hand. Some, but not many. I'm really not in the market for building my own PCs any more. It's odd...a couple of decades ago I'd do it for fun. For free for other people, sometimes. Now I'd rather eat my own toenails. Or someone else's toenails. Or, more sensibly, pay someone else to do it for me.

There is one in the MM at the moment. The price is good (£500 without a graphics card). The specs are close to what I want. But not quite what I want. And I don't like the case much (too small for my preferences - I want more space for better cooling). So if I bought it I'd be constantly reminded that it wasn't really quite what I wanted and that would niggle at me.

So I think I'd need to buy new. But not right now because Barclays has decided that I need their app to authenticate any purchases online. Since I don't have anything that will run their app, no online purchases for me. No problems until I changed the browser I use, which might or might not be a coincidence. So now I have to wait an unspecified amount of time for their authentication device to be delivered. Maybe a day, maybe a week, maybe a fortnight. I can't even buy a £5 game on Steam sale.

Rather annoyingly, I found this out when I had decided what new graphics card to buy and had entered my card details and address and everything else. I'd made a decision and in my head I already had the new card. But no.

Probably not at that spec a little higher .

More like triple that price rather than a little higher. Unless you have a much cheaper source than any I know.

5800x is a beast of a CPU so happy with mine. It does run hot though so investing in a really end spec cooler is a must.

Seeing all 8 cores go over 5ghz is a good feeling.

Also with AMD just fill two of the DIMM slots, so if you are thinking 32GB go 2x16 not 4x8. 3600mhz as well, AMD CPUs are a lot more fussy then intel, yes better in Zen 3 than previous 2, but I'd still be wary of trying to push higher frequency memory.
