Hi,

Not asking for a spec to buy now, but my brother is going to need a PC soon and I am trying to get something together that's cheap as chips. I normally only spec i5 systems around £700-900, so I am a little unsure when it comes do Trinity builds and how they should work.

How does the below look? Performance wise, it's mainly for recording off his Xbox/storage + playing minecraft I guess. I have a case already along with a HDD, although that may be upgraded at a later date.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £99.95
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020047-UK) £49.99
1 x ASRock FM2A55M-DGS AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £44.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G186C9K) £41.99
1 x Be Quiet! Shadow Rock Pro SR1 CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £35.99
1 x Asus 24x DVD±RW DRW-24B5ST SATA ReWriter - Black (OEM) £18.95
2 x BitFenix Spectre LED RED 120mm Fan £6.49 (£12.98)
Total : £304.84 (includes shipping : FREE).

Whatcha think?

Change the motherboard to a A85x chipset you get better graphics, correct me if I'm wrong. But if he doesn't plan on gaming I guess your set up is fine

Really? I went off having an Asrock myself and that it's cheap.

Wouldn't want to spend £86 on a board though, trying to get it around £300. I heard that the Adata RAM isn't too great, which is why I spec'ed the Black Mamba as I could always clock it up to 2133mhz. And any reason for the switch of heatsink, BeQuiet's is similarly priced and performs super quiet.

PSU, that looks better however, never saw the modular one myself.

EDIT: How does this Gigabyte board stand, as I know they're particularly good Intel side of things.

The Cooler Master Hyper 612S allow you to have a extra fan as it has quick snap fan bracket and performs quiet as well

The Gigabyte motherboard only supports up to 1866MHz but you can overclock the RAM to 2133MHz and changed the PSU to 430W,

Couple of things:

1 - If you are not gaming or overclocking, you can save some money and go for the A6/8.
2- Depending on what you want the graphics for, you could get the MSI £44 board and use 1833 RAM at a saving.
3 - No need for an additional cooler as the stock ones are pretty good, again, if not overclocking. Otherwise, check out the low-profile selection.
4 - PSU, you'd be looking at the XFX or Antec for the best choice, low watt (430) will be fine as Trinity is not power hungry.

LOL It's not a matter of winning. It's just practice right now anyway isn't it?

The modular PSU is a good idea, I used the XFX as it's seasonic made and is good value. Pay extra on the PSU by all means if you wish.

The 612S heatsink is 163mm tall. I don't know what case you have but it might be too big. The true spirit is a great value cooler and yes it can have an extra fan mounted too.

Look forward to seeing what you guys settle on and maybe some pics of the build complete ;) ;)

Snips,

Gaming would definitely be minimal, as he would primarily be using his Xbox, however I know he wants to play Minecraft along with me at some points so would be the biggest game played tbh. Also I had an AMD stock cooler before and they are very loud, unsure if it's the same with these, but would prefer a after market cooler for the peace of mind & The modular XFX hono specced looks very good indeed.

Thanks for the info, i'm just taking a quick plunge into Trinity builds for a bit of knowledge gathering.

It's a good spec what you put up and definitely looks good for what my brother will use it for. The case will fit the heatsink nicely. But for a saving of £10, sits nicely in my books. Definitely a few piccy's when it's put together, still need to finish my own project log aha.

The XFX i used isn't modular. The corsair builder 430/500W modular PSUs would be decent alternatives too. I tried to keep to the £300 mark.

I've used the A8K APU and the stock heatsink is tiny, wouldn't call it loud as such. The A10K APU has the better IGP, both the CPU and IGP can be overclocked so a good value heatsink won't hurt.
