Im looking for a bit of advice regarding JSA.

I was an apprentice until November this year when i was made redundant by the company with months left until my advanced modern apprenticeship was finished. Im still currently on the framework for the qualification as im close to finishing this will be finished shortly via controlled assessments so i am not working im technically at a college (But i only attend for an hour every 8 weeks unpaid)

Im currently looking for work to finish out my apprenticeship but at the same time i want a job now be it part time 16 hours or more so i can get some more money again so i don't end up having to loose things and to fund my car.

Would i still be able to sign on?? as i will be seeking work as i want some work until i can get my apprenticeship finished and then return to do my trade (Electrical engineering).. I don't care if im working in B&Q For afew months why this is sorted i need something!

Thanks for any help.

even if you sign on.. it won't be much and it'll take ages :) by the time you've got a part time job you'll end up getting 20quid/month lol! :) I was on it for 3 months before I ditched the whole thing as its just too depressing going there with scum that haven't worked for years.. they won't even bother helping you either :)

just crack on with part time job and don't bother with it - trust me much easier and you'll get the same amount in no time.

Its not just about being dole scum its about national insurance contributions too.
Granted you are very young (id guess) so its probably not an issue to you yet.

Just speak to them. They will be open tomorrow 0845 something..

if 15 mins of your time every 2 weeks is too precious while you look for work then good for you.

Well iv paid a lot into the system really as i was quite a highly paid apprentice. Im more than happy to give up afew hours of each job into searching for a job if it will get me one. Having nothing to do and no money is driving me mad

I didn't think they could make apprentices redundant as it's a training scheme?

They had us employed under a different contract they knew what they was doing unfortunately. In terms of termination the company is also to be ceasing operations within the next 6 months (As it has done many times before and opened with a new name)

But the work really has dissapeared this time we have nothing. Hence people going

If you can't get JSA (Contribution Based) then you might get JSA (Income Based), but you'll have to ask at the JC and book yourself in for a claim interview. (I used to work there, but that was over 4 years ago and the rules for claims change constantly.

Do you know if theyre able to tell me over the phone when i start making my claim

They might, but usually it goes to a Decision Maker after you've had the interview & made the claim. They also have to contact the previous employer to ascertain if you left as you stated due to redundancy etc.

It can be a bit long winded, but there's many that flout the system so they have to check.

Thats excellent thankyou ill call tomorrow if there open and see if i can get it moving

To make a claim you have to do it over the phone now, have everything ready if doing one.

if you do get to claim be ready as you have to login to a site that logs all jobs you looked at and have applied to. You have to apply for at least 20 jobs a day and have to wait at least 4 weeks before payment.

and to the other comments not everyone is a jsa scum, most don't get a look due to there backgrounds when younger but i do see a lot of young 16-21 just not giving a cr** as its free money.

I used to work for DWP try to call before 9am. Lines should open at 8am and it was always quieter before 9. After 9am and through the day there can be queues.

Like others have said have documents to hand.

Nice one, always best to get a claim started as soon as possible.

Wish you luck in the job hunt! I was unemployed in Feb 2013 so feel your pain!
