Long story cut short today i told a kid at work to do some work as he was stood down the end talking **** for ages to the "new" kind of boss. Im just agency at mo in there but have been in there for about 3 months and SHOULD be taken on fulltime soon. Now hes been whining at me on MSN telling me i shouldnt of done it and next time i do he'll tell me where to get off like he did another lady who works in there.

Now this lad wont come in at 9:55 when he starts at 10 because they might make him work the extra 5minutes. Hes normally 5mins late and last week was 20mins late because he stayed at home til 10 waiting for a delivery  (he rides his bike to work which is 3miles or so)

He sits down when ever he can, and is constantly moaning about breaks and how work gets "free" labour out of him because he gets paid for 8hrs and does 8 1/2hr days. He makes out he works harder than anyone else when we all help him do his part of the job when we can and granted he helps us at times too.

Today for example i was helping out on both sides of the machine to keep on top of the work and trying to part of his job when he was chatting down end which is when i told him to do some work ;)

Am i right to tell him to do some work? When everyone in the place was about to say something anway as it doesnt go un-noticed. How is it fair that he doesnt need to help because it wasnt "that" busy but as i tried to explain its easier to keep on top of the work then to catch up....

Laziness in the work place drives me mad, if people turn up expecting to do bugger all then they should just go back home

That guy sounds pretty much like me. If his lack of work = more work for you then fair enough. If not, it shouldn't be any of your business - rather the managers.

If you are agency and he is contracted you should probably be careful about what you say. If you have real cause for concern then bring it up with a manager.
I had to go to one of my managers today because of someone who didn't seem to know very much beyond the basics of the job and I had to keep stopping to help out. Either they hadn't paid much attention in training or the trainer needed spoken to, but it wasn't my place to speak to them. It is, however, the managers job to check up on staff who aren't doing their jobs properly.

thing is it doesnt go unnoticed by the managers, he was on about shift rotors as a few people start at 8 rest at 10, he laughed and you would never make it in at 8 u can barely make 10. And today come 2 o clock lunch he shouts "lunch time" the boss laughed out loud and said "You been on lunch since one havent you, all ive seen you do today is jabba on"

Its really relaxed atmosphere in there most of the time just gets frustrating at times

He, and the already immense growing population of workers in the UK sharing the same work ethic, needs the sack.

You were most definitely right, and if it comes down to it and you explain your thought process to the manager, and he takes his side, you're better off out of there.

No, I wouldn't say you are.
I agree.

Rich would, in my view, be right to bring it to a supervisor/manager's attention, but not to tell this guy what to do. He doesn't, it seems to me, have the authority to do that.

What do you do if you dont mind me asking?

I had no idea what was going onin the op because the op hasn't explained enough for me.

'Sits down whenever he can' - why is this bad?

Work in a mail sorting place, letters are sent down the machine on one end then goto the post coded bins then we take them out in bundles into the boxes and when boxes are full send them down the conveyour to where it gets tagged and bagged up at the end. As theres two sides a north and south we have 1 person on each at all times and i kind of float between the two as the mail can go nuts and as we process like 20k+ an hr it can get busy so i help stop it from jamming up and then i help with the bagging when i can. His job is the bagging but he should be helping out on the machine when he aint doing that. Most of the time he does but then theres days he's being lazy and will wander off, go chat down other end or just sit down waiting for work to goto him when theres stuff he can be doing.

I could have brought it to the managers attention but he wasnt around at the time, and its a strange place to work theres no kind of heirarcy everyone is on same kind of level and if some 1 p****s you off you tell em to sort it out kind of thing lol. They all know what hes like at times anyway, everyone does as they laugh at mock him about it at times.

i hold my hands up and admit im quite lazy in the workplace, but i dispise people of my own staff level trying to boss me about, if you have a problem, tell the manager

Well thats your own fault then aint it really, u cant expect to be lazy and for people not tell you to do some work. If you turn up with that attitude then i wouldnt even bother turning up. I DISPISE laziness in the work place it aint up for other people to do your work for you.

Well thats the diff between you two then ;) We all help each other out when we can, but at times he feels he doesnt need to and other times im left trying to do two things

ive been in that situation many times before, as about 30% of our workforce is useless, i might be lazy but some people there put me to shame lol

until your in a position of authority i would suggest you change your attitude, no infact, i would change your attitude anyway.

your not in charge, your not even a proper member of staff.

Know how you feel mate used to be exactly like that in my old work. Didn't stop me shouting at them when they weren't doing any work. Thats what there getting paid for after all. Lazy b******!!

if a temp came in and tried to boss me about i'd tell him where to stick it, I will respond to a friendly suggestion form people i work with or a direct instruction from people i work for

but at the end of the day you are a temp and as well as that you have no direct authority over thsi guy either so i reckon No,you are not in the right.

The boss knows about it as well so its even less your responsibility to tell him off. Maybe he likes running the place with a relaxed atmosphere? If I was in the other guys shoes I would be seriuosly annoyed as well
