Am i in the right?

IMO you are in the right. nobody in their right mind opens their door when a car is passing... and if she cared so much about the elderly she would think twice before taking a risk.

You're in the right.

There is even a specific offence for opening your car door into oncoming traffic

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/105/made

Its only a minor offence and would likely only carry a fixed penalty fine, but still ,its a specific offence she's guilty of.

Added to the fact the op was not close enough to parked cars to hit the door its a closed case.

OP should go tell her husband not to let her drive.

Ah ok i see what your saying but do still think it is a societal shift, Everyone out for themselves at all times. it does seem to be spreading out from London though and as Essex is almost greater London then this is what will happen.

How is essex, possibly "almost greater london"?

People in Essex are just incredibly ignorant, which is supported by this thread, ie one old woman thinking its ok to try and get out of a car whilst another car is driving towards them and then you thinking its ok to carry on driving towards them regardless.

what would you acheive? if your car was damaged, im sure her insurance company paying the cost would really teach her something? or was it precisely that, if there is blame there is a claim?

and then arguing that Essex is somehow Greater London. even if you look at it in terms of geography, theyre different places!

I am going to call you Mr assumption from now on, it was not a "I'm going to drive towards you no matter what" moment, the way she had her hand on the door was almost as if she was going to shut it, she looked up at me and to my surprise actually opened it wider and by this time I was going slowly anyway, the old lady had not even swung her legs out of the car to get out.

I was not willing to bit her car as I positioned myself more than the extended cars door width which is how I passed with no issue.

Some parts of Essex are basically Greater London, many inside the M25 Essex residents actually say they live in Greater London. Maybe when you are getting to Colchester and bordering Suffolk it may be different. Also I did not say Essex IS Greater London.

She shouldn't have opened the door in front of you but if you had time to stop you should have in my opinion.

3 door car with the door swung wide open was either going to result in someone getting out or the driver reaching in with their bum to the road to grab something.
