Am I missing out not using a 4k HDR Monitor (Xbox Series X)

So is there a 1440p monitor that supports full HDR?

Or are you all using 4K TVs but setting the resolution to 1440p and if you're doing that how do you know the game is running at 120fps and not 1440p/60?

I'm not too fussed about 4K but I am about HDR and my Xbox doesn't detect my monitor as a HDR monitor even though it's meant support some basic version of it

I use both a 1440p165 monitor in 1440p120 VRR, and while it technically has HDR no 27” monitor has true HDR. It’s better to have no HDR than a rubbish HDR 400-800 solution.

On my 4K120 TV I use 1440p120 with VRR and apart from it being very obvious when running content at 120 FPS I can see the frame rate if I overlay the picture information window in the TV’s menu.

Ok thanks, so ultimately if you choose 1440p 120 in the Xbox menu it will display that regardless of the screen being 4k capable and if the game supports it

I was just confused because a while back when I said on this forum that my monitor was showing 120fps in Gears 5 someone said it's not running at 120fps is probably running at 60fps and the monitor is just showing 120fps for some reason!

Mine is set to 1440p 120 and VRR and my assumption is that if the game supports it, it will run it at that. If it doesn't it'll run it at 60 or even 30 FPS for none FPS boost or optimised games

I might be wrong but with gears 5 I think it sticks to around 4k/60 it uses dynamic resolution so probably dips below 4k in certain areas. 120fps I think is just multiplayer from memory.

I am guessing depending on your TV if you set 1440p on the xbox your TV will probably upscale that resolution to 4k.

It will. Otherwise you would have big black boarders

Just set it to 4K120 and pick performance mode in the games.

If you have an older TV where you have to choose between 4K60 or 1440p120, choose 1440p120 or you won't get the performance option in most games.

Excuse my ignorance but why if I have it connected to a 1440p monitor am I missing something?

I just booted it up and checked, I ticked allow 4k and set the resolution to 4K but it doesn't allow me to select 120hz with 4k enabled

Interestingly if I enable 4k it states my monitor is HDR10 if I disable it it states it isn't HDR compatible

For your 1440p120 monitor just set it to 1440p120 and ignore anything 4K.

So do you know why the 4k tick box states "enables 4k features even if your display is set to a lower resolution"

What does that mean exactly because it says my screen is HDR capable With it checked but previously it didn't

1440p and 120hz is still set but with the 4K check box set too where is was previously unchecked

Just fired up NFS Heat and my 1440p monitor says it's running at 4K HDR with Xbox settings set at 1440p/120 and 4K check box enabled

Seriously I don't understand!

Your monitor must be able to handle a 4K signal, it will be downscaling the 4K signal to 1440p. My BENQ EX2780Q can handle a 4K signal from both my Xbox Series X and PS5. I have the "enable 4K" unticked so I can run Call of Duty at 1440p 120hz.

If that's how it works then 1440p images will look bad as there will be upscaling and then downscaling.

I've unchecked it now I just thought it was interesting that my monitor detected and displayed a 4k image and it stated HDR instead of SDR

Also interesting was having to have the 4K content box checked for the Xbox to see the monitor as HDR compatible and not see it as HDR compatible when the box is unchecked

I thought it looked good too, the image was sharper and lighting seemed brighter and more colourful but I felt it didn't run as well which didn't make sense because NFS Heat isn't optimised but FPS and fluidity is most important so I've unchecked it now
