Am i missing something?

Well thankyou for all your help over the past few days everyone who has posted to me.

Im 100% Definatly not getting the 9550, i am going to get the i5.

And i am also definatly splitting it into 2 months which gives me 450 each month. This month im going to buy processor and gfx card.

I was going to get i5 750, unless you think i should get an i7 with the new few extra pounds. And a 5850

Budget and i7 prob isnt the best, its like starting on a new platform where everything you get with an i5 needs more money to equal good system on i7 so not worth it for under £800

Nothing wrong with the 955 chip either really think is the same as the i5 and maybe slightly better when where not talking about overclocking it. I got the 955 and can play cod mwf2 and other games while benching it at 90 to 100% so not bad either way.
you can get the full works on AMD with screen etc for around £700 but either way both are great budget systems

Unless there is a sale I would prob hold the cash and get it all at the same time. you never know there might be a price reduction or somthing. happened to me plenty of times :D

^^ I hope :D I need a new one :D

me too :D
waiting for the HD56** and nvidias new card to come out to see if prices go down. cant see them going up so nowt to loose, and the 9800GTX+ should be adequate for now.
things that aint too likely to change in price are psu, mobo, OS and drives in my opinion. ram from what we have been noticing at work is up and down like a yoyo at the moment, and with the imminent arrival of the i9 and new gfx cards i can only assume it will force prices of current items down.

not sure if its been mentioned yet but i have found that most of these shop bought pc's have bios's that are pretty much stripped of all overclocking features and often i have found some are very picky if you start upgrading them with components not originally in them.
for example i had a compaq presario that i wanted to use as an htpc with a msi amethyst skt 939 motherboard in it and when i put a radeon 4350 in it it immediatly hit 100% cpu usage as soon as it was switched on, after much research i found that it was the hdmi audio controller on the gfx card causing the conflict with the motherboard and had to disable it and route audio through the motherboard.
sometimes these shop built pc's use unique chipsets only offered to system builders so you have to watch for that.

yeah they use very basic boards and generally cheap harddrives. I replaced my dads maxtor it used to take 15mins to load the desktop 100% and and his new WD did it straight away. I dont know where they get such low spec drives Im sure if you brought the lowest spec drive on here it wouldnt constantly click and grind away for half an hour.

I don't think you're being realistic enough with your expectations yet scott. If you do still plan to buy a complete system with monitor, OS software, mouse+keyboard, case, 500gb harddrive, dvd-rw, 4gb ram, power supply, motherboard, cpu and finally graphics card, you can't just suddenly make jumps up to a higher tier of product and expect everything else to fall easily into place.

In taking pretty much the cheapest option at every step, the i5 750 + cooler + radeon HD 5850 + all the other internal components and OS software would come to a total of £758 + shipping + vat. That leaves £142 to get a monitor, keyboard and mouse...so you'd have to compromise by getting a 20" monitor which kind of negates the whole point of having an HD5850 since 1600x900 is hardly a demanding resolution to play at (I game at 1440x900 on my 9800gt). That leaves no extra monies for buying an i7 and also a pretty dismal situation where you've had to pick every single other part in terms of how cheap you can get them and not whether they are the right part for the job.

Perhaps one reasonable step might be to drop from an i5 750 down to the i3 530? That frees up £56 at current OcUK prices. Dropping the HD 5850 down to an HD 5770 would also free up another ~£100. You'd then end up with ~£300 with which to get the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and more importantly you'd have the ability to bump up the quality of other parts that you maybe wouldn't be totally happy with (you mentioned you'd quite like a blueray player instead of a normal dvd-rw for example).

Or you could take the more usual OcUK approach and increase your budget even further. ;)

A realistic Price for your budget, this or i5 you cant work miricles anymore with that amount of money.

That is more than enough for what you need and leaves you plenty for screen etc without being put out of pocket.

EDIT * forgot CPU was OEM add £1 for the retail. lol what odd pricing :D £1 for heatsink and fan bargin.
