She was lying. That's not a way to retain customers. Not only that but she straight accepted that they couldn't compete with people reselling their own product!

Vodafone did this when I left them, Told them the price I would be paying and the guy just went "oh... yeh we can't offer anywhere near that, theres no point in me even trying!"
