Am I overthinking a TV wall mount?

Moving house next week and the new house (against my will really) needs to have the TV mounted above the fireplace.

It's not my preferred choice at all but is the only place it "works" in the room.

I've been having a quick look around and prices vary so much. There's a pretty cheap one on Amazon with tens of thousands of decent reviews.

TV is a standard 55inch hisense so nothing too heavy.

Am I overthinking this? Is there anything I should particularly look for when mount shopping? Seems a bit cheap is all!

Id just say over spec it, so if you currently have a 55" and there is a size up mount that does 55" minimum get that Vs one that does 55" maximum.

Also double check it works with the vesa your TV has.

You're not overthinking this. With plain wall brackets it's okay to get the cheap ones. There's very little that can go wrong due to poor engineering with those.

When it comes to a bracket with motion though them things are different. Read the 3-star reviews. You'll see several comments that the bracket wither didn't hold the TV level even though the wall mount was installed correctly, or that the bracket started to sag under the weight of the TV after a few weeks. Both these situations show that the flexible joints have too much play or the metal around them is weak so they give under the strain.

Back when plasma was going through its last hurrah a customer of mine bought one of the Panasonic ZT65s. This thing had a stunning picture. It even made SD look good. He works as a kitchen and bedroom fitter, so in his lounge he built a lovely media wall complete with a bespoke recess so that the TV could be pushed back flush. Given the size and weight plus the need to get this thing to sit level no matter where the bracket was pulled out to, I recommended a really good full motion bracket. The catch, it was going to be £250. He thought that was OTT, and so bought a bracket similar to the one you've linked. This came from Richers. It cost him £80. I installed everything and then showed him the spirt level at various points without the TV hung from it. All was level.

We attached the TV. All was no longer level. Just putting the TV on it had strained the joints. We ended up re-mounting the wall plate using some spacers and re-drilling some holes to get the wall plate cockeyed enough that the TV was reasonably level. It never sat flush with the wall surface though. Even after repositioning it the TV bracket moved so that one side of the TV 'walked' forward under the weight.

Yup. Better to be overspecced.

The wall mount I've got my 60" plasma on is rated for almost twice it's weight and screens up to 85". It wasn't cheap, but it was a few years ago now and I'm going to keep it for a while. Well worth it. The biggest issue was bolting it to the wall. Wall studs were in a weird position, wo took some of the plasterboard off the wall and added in some noggins between the studs and braced it all up. Then mounted to the noggins. It's been pulled forward and rotated regularly, and it's still all tight and level.

Worth knowing that pull down TV mounts are a thing. Good for higher TVs when you want to relax watching something a bit longer and have the TV at a more pleasant viewing angle.

Good to know on the above. Thinking about it I don't think we will bother with anything other than a tilt mechanism to it. I don't think I'll be pulling the TV away from the wall to watch anything so a simple wall bracket will suffice.

The pull down mounts are a no go for us too as we will have a log burner that will be rasping away through winter!

you've looked back through some older threads

if the tv's getting a convection current from a log burner beneath that doesn't sound ideal, although some people have fans to circulate the air.
