Someone is selling this cpu for this price and wants to use paypal
so if he gave me his email address and i paid this amount to him am i safe from being scammed ? as this would sale wouldnt be through flee or retailer. so im not sure if im safe ...

cheers

I wouldn't do it as you have no comeback if the chip doesn't arrive.

If you want a 3950X then why not wait a few weeks till the 4000 series release and I'm sure there will be quite a few people upgrading, maybe check out MM/flee at this time.

All I can say is my experience about 8 years ago though a classified ad on ebay which was that I paid for an item that never turned up. I raised a case and I got my money back.

The "seller" aka scammer never even bothered to reply to the case, though he did try some tricks to get me to drop the case lol.

The seller asked me to pay via gift (red flag should have really gone up at that point), but I paid via goods / service and worked out how much the fees would be for him and added that as an extra.

Had I sent it as a gift, I'd be **** out of luck.

I wouldn't risk it for £500, mine was a pretty small amount if I recall. Its gotta be 50/50 chance of being a scam at best, its just going to be extra stress whilst you wait for the refund.

What is it that scammers rely on? Gullibility thats what. Basically you take a high value, sought after item and make it at price thats just slightly above 2 good to be true.

An item like the 3950x is that item, a price good enough for the scammer and at a price that would be snapped up by the victim.

Deals like this need to be done in person so if you want to foil the scam tell him you are in the area and will pay cash on collection. Then when the sorry can't do it because of some crap excuse you will know your answer.

Wouldn't even pay cash on collection for an expensive CPU unless I'd seen in working and freshly pulled tbh. Get home and find it's a fake IHS or DoA!

Is this some dodgy bloke you met down the pub? None of us know what the situation is.

If you're new to buying used items online and want to know if it's safe, then yes. I've been doing this for the last 18 years. The fact it's a 3950x doesn't change the answer. You could have asked it as a general question about buying online.

Only if it's via a reputable auction site with safeguards though. I would never send £500 to somebody on some dodgey classified website unless I was at their house at the time to collect in person, and I saw it working.

I've seen reputable and trustworthy sources selling the 3950x for £550. It's not worth taking a risk to save £50, if indeed it is a risk (we dont know the facts.)

I've bought a 3900X that was advertised about the going rate on the cheap side on da bay and it didn't register DIMMs in dual channel mode only A worked, some pins were missing so it was likely a defect or damaged somehow and the seller probably got it on a joblot and either was ignorant of the fact or hoped i'd use only one DIMM or not notice RAM missing. Paypal case and he offered me it for 150.00 so i agreed and then did a 'lga' type mod with strands of CAT 7 cable inserted into the cpu socket with a slight amount of flattened solder on the end to make more surface area. Has been working fine for a few months in my mums pc but goes to show it can be a dodgy world out there.

yeah guys thanks for the clarification though your right it could be a dead one or **** one lol going to wait and see and let it play out with prices once the 4000 series arrive october 9th hell might pick up a 4000 series instead...
just hope in the mean time my 3090 card can run properly with my 8700k @ 5.0ghz and my z370 mobo`s pci express 3.0 lanes lol

8700k is no slouch still for gaming at least. especially with a decent OC. You’ll do more than fine mate :)

A 5 Ghz 8700K won't need replacing for some time, I wouldn't rush to buy a dodgy 3950X.

Any reason for a 3090 instead of 3080?

Well i dont plan on buying any more graphics cards for the next 2 years like i did with my 1080ti`s and they lasted me quite a long time so i want this one to be the same so i figure go for the fastest out there and pray it lasts 2 years + lol :D im sure it will with a 3440x1440 @120hz and 2560x1440 @144hz and 4k lg oled @60hz
i figure it should last me i have options :D + i like to jump generations makes the experience a lot better :D

8700K is still a good gaming chip, it's not going to limit any GPU especially at higher resolutions.

Better to wait for AMD's 4XXX CPU's and get a proper upgrade.

If it's a Paypal gift payment you have no chance of getting money back.

If it's a normal Paypal transaction then you have half a chance.

I wouldn't risk it....And it won't actually be faster for games as they don't tend to use more than 8 cores.

There is no performance loss with an RTX 3080 using pcie 3.0. If you look at the 15 game fps avarage you can see that pcie 4.0 offers no real advantage. It shouldn't be a huge amount different with an RTX 3090.
