Am I the only one who thinks the Ford Mustang is an ugly car?

Why the hell does everyone worship it? Of course I respect people for having different tastes in cars, but I can't understand why so many people like them. I'd rather drive a Fiesta tbh.

Like the really old ones and the really new ones. 80's and 90's ones were horrific!

have you seen the new clarkson dvd called "the good the bad the ugly" where a mustang (horse) beats the ford mustang round a racing track  :p

Just found it, very funny. Not as funny as the comments though. Some of those keyboard warriors are so petulant.

I just honestly can't see the attraction. I think they look hideous and apparently they drive like a shed on wheels too.

Do they? Better go tell Gibbo then, he seems to think his drives okay.

there must be something wrong with you tom, a fiesta over a 1960's mustang?!?! hell, even my gf loves that car

Suppose I ought to confirm this - which generation of Mustang are you talking about Tommy B? They did change quite a bit over the years.

The modern ones. Well to be honest I'm not really a fan of any of them.

As I said, I respect everyone has their own choice and I'm sure Gibbo loves his. I just don't understand the mass appeal.

Then I shall not try and convince you otherwise. If you don't 'get' the Mustang, you won't be swayed by anything short of riding in one with the driver planting his foot :)

But you can say that about any high-performance car. At the end of the day the only thing between them is their appearance and whether it appeals to you or not. At 18 the only high-performance car I've ever been in is a 911 Turbo and that was absolutely unbelievable, although I suspect there are other cars that are just as fast.

edit - obviously I was a passenger not driving lol

It's a quote from an episode of The Dukes Of Hazzard. Cooter says it in "Mary Kaye's Baby" in the first season.

It's mostly uninformed twaddle when referring to stuff like the current model Mustang and the Corvette. But yes, the Americans have made some cars that have had appalling handling over the years.

All I shall say is that there is nothing quite like a V8 muscle car running at full tilt. May not handle as well as a Ferrari, you may not like the looks....but the sound, the torque, the sheer size of a lot of them....great cars :) The current Mustang is certainly the best they've built in a long time, and while I'd obviously prefer a first gen one (if you see Clarksons 'Good, Bad, Ugly' DVD then check out the GT390 and it's glorious engine note) the current model is rather tasty, especially in Saleen trim.

Proper 'stang :D

You know, it's rather funny when I hear about people saying American cars san't handle worth a crap. When the Ford Mondeo is a rebadged American car, and someone here said that they were in the States driving a rental when they realised it was a rebadged Vauxhall, etc. Most often times the only difference between what you folks drive and what's available over here is the MacPherson strut cartridges and a couple pieces of fake chrome (badges).

Some times there are vast differences (I can't think of a single car over here that has smaller than a 1.5L engine) like the difference between the EU/UK version of the Chrysler Neon and the US Dodge Neon. The US version is a pretty good car (for what it is, the lowest in the lineup), but it's not anywhere as hideous as I've heard your version is over there.

Granted, I'm not saying we make the best in cars over here. Hence why I drive a Toyota. But they're not THAT different to what you folks have over there.

[Disclaimer] I'm talking about when you compare cars of the same size and engine, etc. I'm not talking about comparing a Fiesta to a Dodge Magnum here, ok? :p

They are stunning looking cars, with a lot of recognition. Persoanlly I love old american muscle cars, so i love the stang big time. The later ones were a bit limp looking, but the new one looks brilliant.

I think the Mustang looks absolutely fantastic, and you can quote 0-60 stats, handling and all sorts till blue in the face but to me it just screams 'awesome', perhaps it's down to the fact that you never see them in the UK, but I think it's more down the styling which basically says "screw you girly-man euro sports cars, I am legendary" :p

I love em, and would absolutely love to have Gibbo's version :)

Granted, but i think people refer to "american cars" as the models made exclusively for the US market, the massive barges, Buicks, Cadillacs etc, that are just basically a massive (but really crap) engine, a sofa in the front and back, and some metal, with the level of design of an anvil.

One thing i dont get is why Americans as a rule, think EU cars are really slow because they dont have a 5+ litre engine

1 - Our cars weigh less than a planet
2 - Our engines actually have to be developed, because our petrol prices are higher, so we dont rely on the same tech used to produce the model T
3 - Our roads have corners, so having 99% of the cars weight at the front isnt great
4 - We dont feel the need to haul room sized seating around in our cars
5 - We dont need to be able to stretch our arms fully to reach for our 6 gallon coke drink or half cow burger we got at the drive through, hence our cup holders accept a small coffee cup, or small soft drinks can, rather than a dustbin

Sorry to stereotype, but its what seems to happen to us with our "puny" 1L engines, which actually have a use, if you are in a city centre or drive on tiny trips (5 miles or something commute).

Anyone tried to raise a discussion on XS.org ? George W is god, 1mpg is the target fuel efficiency, patriotism to the extreme, massive pick up trucks are king and i go hunting native americans on a weekend

Most pictures i've seen of american streets, everyone seems to drive Toyotas, Hondas, Fords etc.

Im sure there are a lot of disastrous american cars, but a lot more good ones, but why do the bad ones seem to be so popular.

I mean how popular are Ford F150 (?) or Cadillac Escalade subs / pickup trucks ? They feature reasonably frequently in american TV programmes at least :o ... but one of the funniest things i ever saw was a review of the Harley Davidson F150 on Top Gear, in which the dash dropped to bits, a major component (gearbox?) broke, the ride was the worst Clarkson had ever had, and the suspension etc etc were basically the same as the 195x model, the most major change was the body

Rant over :o

If anyone visits the motors section of xtremesystems occasionally, they'll know the bias i speak of...
