Am I weird for smiling at people?

In London, yes, weird.

Up in the north where folk don't all hate each other, it is pretty normal. Where I live you are in the minority if you don't acknowledge people.

I solve this very real problem by avoiding people. No need to worry about the correct social etiquette then. People just confuse the hell out of me so I tend to just ignore them and hope for the best.

I tend to smile and and say morning, but that's more to do with where I live. Even when I'm in London, I tend to walk around looking a bit more chirpy, there are too many resting bitch face people - enjoy life, smile and try and spread it to others.

Definitely this. I'd say the divide isn't even as large as some have already mentioned. I work in the centre of Birmingham and out of habit I do it from time to time as I'm leaving the office. Never had so much as smile as far as I can remember. However, just 4 miles down the road in a slightly more suburban setting the reply rate is almost 100%.
Harborne by any chance ? :) So glad I moved here, my local 'village' used to be Kings Heath or Stirchley, tatted women smoking and swearing at 4 or 5 kids pushing a pram, it's hard to believe it's only 5 mins away in the car sometimes.

And in answer to your original question, no it's certainly what most people do in my area, which makes the difference between tolerating living in a city or being depressed.
