Am I wrong to think this is wrong ??

if they were mentally disabled I'd maybe think differently, but physically disabled (or just fat ********, as the case may be) they should be locked up

Jeez there is some ignorance about disability in this thread.
Some disabled people cant even do the most basic of things for themselves, and so yes it is very wrong that they stole money but believe me it would just cost even more money to cope fully with their needs in a prison unless it was one specifically set up to do so.

surely there must be at least one prison with the facilities to accomodate somebody disabled?

and cost isnt the issue, if that was the case no one would ever go to prison

What disability do they have? (cant access the website)

If its purely because they are obese Prison might actually help them? Stick em on a strict diet.. and i hear prisons have great gyms.

if they are able enough to go out to the shops and steal money up to 13 times a day, they are able enough to get jailed

There is also a lot of claims of victimhood for disabled people in this thread. (And before you say it, yes I do know about disability). The article does not state the nature of their disabilities, what effect they have, or what support is required, so that the above is relevant is just an assumption (perhaps chosen to support your argument) on your part.

The bottom line is that the judge has sentanced them more lienently than he would have done a non-disabled person for the same crime. That is unnacceptable.

She was pushed there, in her wheelchair....disabled people are allowed out you know.

It's wrong in all the finest glory of positive discrimination. However, I doubt very much that there is any Prison that could cope with them, there is little choice really.

There's also a lot of sycophantic pandering to a couple who have committed fraud. If, and only if, they have a legitimate disability (I do not consider obesity a legitimate disability unless it is due to medical reasons) then fair enough; there is enough cause to be affronted. Until then, however, defending their sentence, due to their 'disability', is rather churlish.

then surely she can be pushed into a cell :)

Im sure she could.

How exactly is she going to get into bed on her own, or take herself to the toilet, or wash herself, or get to the dining hall that may or may not be down a corridor too narrow or a flight of stairs with no lift?

She would have all these adaptions and hoists/things to make her life a bit easier in spite of her disability already set up at home.

then her "disabled" partner can push her in to the cell, or off a cliff, either way is good

I wasnt aware men and women were allowed to be on the same wing in a prison?
He is more than likely her main carer.

Yeah I love that...they put someone who's gone into jail for say, mugging someone, or assaulting someone etc.

Then they give them a GYM, to go in, get beefed up to the max, and come out after the sentence the size of a tank!

Yeah...that's helpful. Why prisoners have 'rights', I do not know.

Then give her an equivilent sentance to prison within her home. The alternative given in this case isn't equivilent by a long shot.

I certainly wasn't defending them or their sentence, just to be clear :) They deserve all they get. Fraud is fraud. The point I was making (and I believe knip and vixen too) was that the "ZOMG they look fat, lock them up!" comments were unhelpful at best and ignorant at worst.

Weight gain, and in some cases obesity, often follows on FROM disability, and doesn't automatically mean it is the CAUSE of it. It was that attitude I took umbrage with, not the case itself :)

Anyway what the hell? Theres loads of prisons to cater for disabled people...How stupid to say they can't cater for them.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation here about the capabilities of prisons in this country to look after the health of people who are very ill or disabled. Most prisons in this country have their own mini-hospitals and have ground-floor accomadation.

There are already people in prison who cannot walk or look after themselves properly.

Just because their local jail might not be able to cope doesn't mean they can't be sent to another one in the country.

This decision is just wrong and sends out entirely the wrong message.
