(I do not consider obesity a legitimate disability unless it is due to medical reasons)
With that I do agree, if their only disability is to be overweight (through no medical condition) then they cant claim to be disabled.

Im sure she could.
How exactly is she going to get into bed on her own, or take herself to the toilet, or wash herself, or get to the dining hall that may or may not be down a corridor too narrow or a flight of stairs with no lift?
She would have all these adaptions and hoists/things to make her life a bit easier in spite of her disability already set up at home.
I certainly wasn't defending them or their sentence, just to be clearThey deserve all they get. Fraud is fraud. The point I was making (and I believe knip and vixen too) was that the "ZOMG they look fat, lock them up!" comments were unhelpful at best and ignorant at worst.
Weight gain, and in some cases obesity, often follows on FROM disability, and doesn't automatically mean it is the CAUSE of it. It was that attitude I took umbrage with, not the case itself![]()
and you know for a fact she needs all these things? your just as ignorant as the rest of us
people in glass houses and all that![]()
No I dont, I do however live with a child who has a severe disability so I think I am in a better position than some at knowing what caring for a disabled person involves thankyou.
is there not a policy of only jailing those who are a harm to the public? In other words if there are other ways to bringeth down the hammer of Justice without imprisoning offenders then Judges have been advised to take it.
They've been tagged
They've been vilified and castigated by the papers
They will probably be pariahs within their own community and be fearful of going out.
And the have the Responsibility and burden of paying back the £32,000
If you stick em in prison they're Responsibility for themselves is taken away.
Keep em within the community and they have to face other people and live with the responsibility with what they have done.
And remember folks..the mitigating factors.... the manner in which the defrauded the money...If you found an undetectable way of getting money that did not seem to harm anyone else would you not grab at the chance?
Both were sentenced to 51 weeks’ jail, suspended for 12 months. The judge told them they would have been jailed had they not been disabled.
They will be tagged during a six-month curfew.
and I have a crippled cousin who was more or less a vegetable after an accident, so what? It bares no relevance to the people in question
they were obviously abled enough to go out and commit a crime, surely a sign that they dont need the kind of attention you think they need
What a charming turn of phrase. "Crippled" and "Vegetable"
How about adding spaz for good measure as well.
The level of ignorance regarding disabilities is quite frankly astounding in this thread, nevermind the case in question.
Simply, none of us are in full possession of all of the facts, therefore, none one can really comment.
All of the "lock em up" brigade should just calm down. No one was hurt in this crime, so I fail to see why locking them up is the only solution. If you ask me, we may be in a better state if there were enough room for all of the violent offenders and leave non violent criimes to be punished in other ways that do not cost the country hundreds of pounds a day.
Prepares to be flamed...

Would you like to be referred to as a Cripple?
In a world where there are restrictions on race and sex in terms of what you can and cannot say, I think that being able to use derogatory terms for disabled people is disgusting.
Cripple is not a nice way to descibe someone, FULL STOP.
a dictionary said:A person or animal that is partially disabled or unable to use a limb or limbs
the diabled couple in the OP wouldnt learn anything from going to prison and theyd just take up valuable space
