Are the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail Any good? My mate is thinking of upgrading from his 3500 Venice. He would have to buy DDR2 and a new mobo too?

What do you think guys? He wants to keep costs down buy upgrade to a better CPU. Thanks

Well if hes going to buy a new mobo and memory too ( which he would have to to switch to AM2 ) then he may as well go for an intel C2D setup as in the end its likley to be a faster system

The 6000+ is £187 which woul pretty much cover an E6300 and a decent mobo.

He could flog his current 939 stuff to raise funds for the memory :)

A lot of people think that because the AMD CPU is at 3Ghz, it will be faster but there not. The AMD X2 6000+ cpu is faster than a E6300 core2duo but it will overclock to 3Ghz and will be a lot better than the X2 6000+.

Going for the core2duo cpu, you get better ram for your money, whereas with the X2 6000+, you get cheap ram and not much overclocking out of it.

core 2 duo all the way over athlon x2 could get a 6600 for that price and it would be miles faster
the amd 6000 and intel e6600 are the same performance for price only when overclocking does the intel out perform amd

It may only be the equivalent at stock but why would anyone want to run a E6600 at stock when you can easily get 3ghz + with no messing, unlike the x2 6000 which is unlikely to even get to 3.2 as its already running near its limits.

AMD are bringing out a new socket soon as well for the new core, or is that just hear say?

If it is true then C2D would definitely be the way to go.

the new skt is really just a bios upgrade
it has the same number of pins just faster hypertransport

Ah right, cheers for clearing that up. Will have to see how the new offerings from AMD do when they come out.

They will be a while...

Why are you so against not going intel.when they clearly have a better chip that is not only miles faster but cheaper too.

Hope its not company tunnel vision syndrome.

I was just reading today that AMD have cut the price of the 6000+ by nearly half in the US from $464 to $241 will Intel respond.

I have already gone the way of Intel, but just interested to see if AMD can get back in the competition as i was with them for a good few years before getting my 6300 a month back.

Bit of healthy competition is always good and can be beneficial to us punters with regards to price drops etc, as mentioned above.
