That applies to everything consumer-ish. How do you think humans survived 2000 years ago.

OT...by my calculations, you Big Stan have averaged 74 posts per day since you joined in April 04! Surely you can't have 60k+ posts!!!
He bought them in a charity auction and gave a massive amount, something like £400 to charity.

The ones who want to spend £240 on a processor which beats AMD's current £730 processor maybe (All at stock)?

If someone is already on 939, its going to cost them more than £240.

CPU=£240
Mobo=£150 for a decent one
DDR2=£200-£300
Total=£590-£690

Not worth it im my opinion, if coming from a 939 system clocked @ 2.8-3.0Ghz, unless you have that much cash to burn.

Of course if your upgrading now, then Conroe is the obvious choice.

AMD have always dominated the enthusiast domain.
This is changing...

I loved my AMD opty 170 and have both intel systems in the past.
Now my conroe system flattens my previous opty dualcore system running at 2.8ghz

This is no "fan-boy-ism" in fact the people who justify AMD at the moment are the fanboys and are reluctant to admit the conroe is a faster cpu in everything it does.

however at high resolutions several reviews showed negligable difference between FX62 and X6800, both at stock as the graphics is the bottleneck, so core 2 duo is faster at everything except high resolutions in which case its marginally faster but its not at all noticable, talking 1 or 2 FPS

I never disputed that the Conroe was the fastest processor available atm, beating the X2 by some margin. This isn't up for debate really, it's there in black and white in all the reviews.

The "fan-boy-ism" I'm referring to is the attitude shown by some Intel/Conroe zealots who are spouting off rubbish like "Intel will crush AMD". As I said the relevant market shares won't change much as the fact that Conroe is faster than the X2 doesn't matter to the vast majority of buyers and Intel has to build up a whole new brand image after ditching the Pentium name.

I found the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 939 Retail for £28 inc vat, but the product is dated 1st of August.

Going to be a cheap upgrade with an Asrock mobo!! :D
