AM2 or Conroe?

OK daft question time - could you fit the current 940 optys in andrun with DDR2 then?

Nope, apart from pin incompatibilities the memory controller is in the CPU and the current mem controller in the 940 Opterons (or any K8 processor) can only handle DDR1.

conroe for me, looking forward to the change. is a 4 core version coming out at the beginning of next year? if it is i might just hold fire till then.

nope, the pin allignment is different so it would stop current 940s working with the new 940s... as already said as well even if they were the same you wouldn't be able to use DDR2 because the CPU wouldn't be able to handle it.

Kentsfield is due out Q1 2007 ;)

Well one thing for sure, I'm going to wait till theres further proof it will be 20% faster, I think most of us use our pc's for mainly playing games I want to make sure theres no incompatability with the games I play now - especially online. Worse scenario for me would be buying a full new system only for games not to run properly etc.

I agree about waiting to see some more benchmarks - and also some more benchmarks that are of relevance to my particular uses.....

But I'm pretty confident that my next upgrade will be to Conroe, probably around Sept/Oct. I'm happy to wait till around then, so whatever is the best bang for buck at the time, will be my next purchase. I can't really wait much longer than that....

I'm still stuck on an old P4 2.8GHz and AGP graphics :(

i'm just waiting for them to hit retail to see how they clock in the hands of joe public. any benchmarks of ES chips in the hands of the chosen few are utterly meaningless other than to generate hype ( which there obviously very good at doing ). gonna be sorry to see me opty go tho, but it looks like it could be time for a change. :D

If the conroe that was tested was 20% faster than the FX60 running at 2.8ghz its equivelant would be a FX70

That is right isnt it?
