No you have not gone back in time. A few of my friend have built up Windows 98 rigs for a bit of retro gaming fun so thought I would join in. So I am on the hunt for a nice used motherboard and CPU. The best motherboards I have found that are compatible are socket AM2 and Socket 775. It can be multi core but Windows 98 can only use a single core so its single core performance I am after. So my question is what is the better single core CPU available in these formats?

Thanks

Surely it would be better to look for which motherboard has drivers for windows 98 and go from there?

If you're playing games that require Win98, then I would imagine almost any AM2 or 775 CPU would beat the nuts off it.

Probably best to just get a nice working, compatible, mobo and go from there. for what it's worth, clock-for-clock, the 775 Exxxx CPUs will generally be a little ahead of the AM2s.

Thanks for the reply. I found lots of old windows 98 compatible motherboards out there that was not the problem. I am not overly familiar with CPUs back then so am all a bit lost a sea at the moment. I was hoping someone could shed a little light on the subject to help me narrow down the search. I have looked at probably 100 motherboards and the newest ones I found with full Windows 98 support are AM2 or 775 so guessed one of those is probably a good option. There are older sockets too but guessed older sockets too but figured newest was best?

Graphics drivers might also be a problem- you might have to get a motherboard with AGP to get a card that can do Windows 98.

Thanks for info. I was planning on using AGP as I already have a Geforce 6800 U AGP card. I found quite a lot of AM2 and 775 motherboards with AGP and they all had Win95 support.

I was thinking the same. Any of the newer CPUs would be over kill. So if I aim at 775 and get say one of these https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5VDCMX/HelpDesk_CPU/ then what would be a good single core CPU for it? Thanks :)

If it's single core that you are after then why only AM2 or 775? What about 754 or 939? That's where the performance was back then. You should be able to pick up a socket 754 mobo/cpu/ram bundle off the bay for around £25. When I first got my weather station up and running I needed a Windows XP machine to download the data to so I went on the bay and bought a Athlon 64 3400+/Xilence cooler/Asus K8S-MX/2x 1GB ram bundle for £16 delivered on the bay. After buying a cheap Dell D630 laptop earlier this year I sold the same bundle on the bay and it went for £25. For what it was it was a decent little system with a AGP ATI 9800Pro and played the likes of Transport Tycoon extremely well.

Back in Windows 98 days, you're talking Athlon Thunderbird or Pentium 4 Willamette. S775/AM2 is more XP or Vista days.

Yeah, early P4 or even something like a SLot A Athlon would be great with W98

I am sure that any 939 or 754 AMD with an AGP slot would be worth a shot at putting 98 onto it.

Saying that, there are still a trillion K6-2 550 CPUs out there ( Ok, maybe I am exaggerating that a smidge ) but those were amazing CPUs at the time... I once managed to hit 672MHZ on mine, with a TG133 Mobo... I think? LOL it IS going back a fair bit... that board has locked PCI/AGP slots, something that was fairly rare at the time.

but anyway, I digress.

There are plenty of Socket A buindles out there on some auction site I could mention, and the only shameful thing, is that the sellers seem to ask stupid high prices when the parts are pretty much worthless, but there you go.

P3/P4 and Early Athlon are about the best as they were the kit that was out back then.

Hope you also manage to find drivers too! LOL
