Looking into buying a complete new setup in the next few days, and ideally, i would like to buy the latest stuff possibe, to future-proof me for a few years...

Now, i am looking at the AMD Phenom II 940 3.0GHz CPU, but i notice this is AM2+ socket, and i have seen these are soon to be phased out in favour of AM3 - that right?

AM3 looks good, but CPU speeds are not as high, and the AM3 motherboards don't seem to be stocked much either...

I'd like to buy and build the system, but in 1/2 years time would like to change the CPU and add more memory without having to replace the motherboard or spend LOTS again on other things....

Can anyone give me any advice or point me in the right direction?

Many thanks for reading,
Deano

AM3 motherboards with DDR3 cannot take AM2+ CPUs. However AM2+ motherboards can take both AM2+ and AM3 CPUs. Having said that it's still safer to check first before you buy.

So go ahead and get a AM2+ mobo with PII 940 and DDR2 and rest assure that you can just drop in an AM3 chip in the future.

Nice one, thank you very much!

What's the best AM2+ board out there then?

Also, what about this Memory Change from DDR2 to DDR3? Is this worth thinking about just now, or should i stick with the PII-3.0GHz, 8gb DDR2 Memory with AM2+ Board?

Again, thank you!

Depends on your budget but the ASUS M4A79 Deluxe will get my money. It's in the AM3 section but really it's an AM2+ board.

It's not worth thinking about DDR3 just yet since only AM3 supports it and the AM3 CPU lineup is still pretty poor atm comparing to AM2/AM2+.

What's your budget for the entire build? Might be able to afford i7 you think?

DFI Lan Party DK 790FXB-M2RSH or a Asus M3A79-T Deluxe

personly i think ddr3 is a waste at the moment. just stick with ddr2.

Yeah i wondering why that board was in AM3 most AMD2+ board's will work with AM3 and that board doesnt support DDR3.

Budget around £1k for the complete build, which must include a 24" Monitor, with HDMI (Which i think £250 would do)

So, £750 left for everything else (inc KB & Mouse).... could possibly stretch a BIT more, but i'd be pushing it...

Im still using AM2 and will upgrade to AM3 next year when Windows 7 release then I buy rest of it -- I would wait until begin of 2010 cos there will be new processor for AM3 plus new motherboard that Im interesting to get Nvidia NF 980aSLi... Im sit and wait until after xmas, plenty of time.

I agree on that one :)

I'm going to be OC'ing this system in the future, so will a 450-550w PSU be enough?

Will upload my shopping list shortly...
