AM3+ (AMD FX chips) OC Guide?

Hi 8 Pack,

I was just wondering if there's any chance of you doing an OC guide for the AM3+ platform like your X79 one. I'm specifically interested in the FX chips having just obtained a FX-8350.

My Phenom II wasn't a BE so I could only overclock with the FSB, but with the FX chip it seems the multiplier is also an option and I'm not sure which is best used as the main source of an overclock (i.e. do you push the multiplier as high as you can then fine tune with the FSB or is FSB better?)

Also lots of guides seem to disable CnQ and things like that where as I'd prefer to have my chip clock down and the VCore drop down to match when it's idling. Is this possible?

Old school way was to lower the multi, raise the voltage and try for the highest bus for the memory and motherboard chipset. This was before independant multi's for memory and prior to HT NB clocks. Then you raised the multi and with a combination of multi and FSB and voltages you achieved the best OC (or burnt the CPU :) )

I have tried both ways and found the highest gflops throughput on 10 runs of IBT, was 100 Gflops at 4.8GHz with a 302MHz bus 16x multi, 2.012GHz memory. Higher than this there was throttling due to temps and reduced throughput.

The FX is very easy to overclock to 4.7GHz or a bit more and be prime stable IMO. It is relatively easy to go to 5GHz, bench a bit and play games within the temp envelope. It won't be prime stable on eight workers at least with my cooling (Phanteks air).

I always use CandQ and my current lazy OC is 4.5GHz at 7x to 22.5x 200MHz +0.05V offset.

Id be interested in a guide as well. Can just about do 4.6 on this 8350 and a formula V-z but getting it prime stable has proved challenging. I've only been changing the multi though, haven't got round to playing with fsb yet.

Yeah this would be good. Though I have an ASRock board and all of the options are actual numerical values. I have noticed settings that other people give for their overclocks to be like 120% voltage. 80% LCC etc, We need actual values also please 8 Pack.
 
Nice update! Cant wait to see the guide! Which motherboard are you doing your test 8 pack? Personally would prefer on the M5A99X EVo R2.0 rather than the V Formula-Z since they have different bios

Would love to either keep one of the two above. Though my cooler can handle 5Ghz I doubt ill see it.
 
Still working on this guys. I want to include RAM stuff too so a testing afew combos.

Looking forward to this as I've never overclocked my RAM before so it will be a good insight as to where to start. Plus I'd also like to see how much I can get out of my chip whilst staying stable! :)

Ive gotten 4.6ghz stable but i usually stick with 4.5ghz because there is a huge V difference the two, i can run 4.5ghz on either 1.38-1.4V while 4.6ghz to be stable its around 1.45V
