AM3 CPU advice

I wish mate :(

It's an older AM2 motherboard, MSI K9N Platinum. I have my eyes on two cheapo AM3 motherboards, Asus M4A785TD-V EVO or MSI C45 770.

Hey nitram100,

I'll tell you something, don't be fooled into thinking these are "cheapo AM3 motherboard" as that isn't the truth, I thought the same when I first bought mine but was "gobsmacked" at the quality of these things!

I know some people kinda started getting used to £150-£200 motherboards but that's just nonsense, they are not worth that much IMHO but people still "blindly" keep paying out these ridiculous prices . .

Anyway are you intending to go Crossfire at some point or stick with a single "meaty" GPU? . . . also do you have a lot of expansion cards (PCI TV, Audio etc) . . I ask because have you considered a uATX mobo? . . . honestly if your a Single-GPU guy and don't have heaps of expansions cards this is a great board . . . "stacked" wity features!

Asus M4A785TD-M Evo

£69.99 inc

or if you need Crossfire PCI-E 2.0 x8/x8 then this may be better

Asus M4A79XTD Evo

£88.99 inc

I'm sure there are plenty of other good boards too, Gigabyte have a heap of boards priced a little keener than ASUS so check them out!

Hey Wayne thanks a lot for the info.

I'm definitely not going to go crossfire and have no expansion cards.

Do you happen to know the difference between the Asus M4A785TD-M Evo and the Asus M4A785TD-V Evo? Is it just that the M is microATX?

Thanks for the advice mate.

The Asus M4A785TD-V Evo has an 8+2 phase VRM with heatsinks so it should be a better choice for overclocking.

I would certainly suggest as Cat points out above, if you are looking at the PII X4 / X6 or the Zosma X4 in terms of overclocking then you want to get a board with 8 + 2 phase VRM with heatsinks! will make a difference

I can vouch, I recently bought a MSI 770 C45 which is cheap in cost but certainly not lacking in quality from what I can tell.

I also bought an Athlon II X3 435 chip for 50 quid, together coming to under 100 quid the most expensive part was the memory.

If you are not into having 100 pci slots on your board, then this is well worth it. As someone else suggested, it seems pointless in blowing 150-200 quid on motherboards when you can have the functionality for 45 quid.
