OK Folks,

I've bought this lot.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £462.96 (includes delivery: £7.99)

Put it together outside the case. So CPU & RAM are in Situ (No cooler in place) for bios flash as others here have said it will need it for 9000 CPU. Read elsewhere it would be OK to have CPU & RAM in situ for Bios flashback
Flashed to latest bios.
Didn't expect it to reboot after Bios flash, CPU was heating up so turned off b4 it overheats.
RAM lit up during Bios flash first time.
Turned it on again, RAM didn't light up.
Cleared CMOS, that didn't work.
Tried 1 stick in default slot 2, booted once, then didn't again.
Tried the other stick in the same slot - nope.
Tried both sticks In slot 4 - nope
Reflashed bios X 2 & cleared CMOS - nope
Reflashed with older Bios that supported 9000 CPU & Cleared CMOS - booted once then didn't again.

When it hasnt booted the CPU & RAM Debug leds are on - Checked for bent CPU pins - OK

PSU is my Superflower Ledex 550 Watter from my backup rig.

I thought I had screwed the cooler down too tight, its not been a problem when I've used it to cooler my previous rigs.

Could be any of the three that is causing this problem. Its off for now while I'm posting this.

Never had this problem before & I've been building my own rigs & for Family since 2003.

Anyone here suggest what I've done wrong or what you think what part has gone wrong?

Thanks.

What are you using for a GPU?

If your using a dedicated GPU I would try the on board GPU and see if you get anything.

How long have you left it booting? Could be doing memory training so could be worth waiting 10/15 mins before doing a reboot.

I am wondering if the bios update has been completed successfully as the RAM is on the compatibility list for the motherboard and from bios 7D75v1L it supports the 9800X3D.

I just built another 9800X3D system with a 9070XT and the board was brand new but came with a bios dated 23/8/2024! so wondering if motherboard providers are even supplying new boards with the latest bios out of the box

Could try flashing again with no CPU or RAM installed. (just in case the incompatible CPU corrupted the bios)

Don't think you need this video.

@ED-209 @freddie64 I've tried re-flashing with no CPU & RAM, cleared CMOS. Put RAM & CPU back in, Turned on Result = No boot, RAM is not lighting up, CPU & RAM Debug LED are on. Left it on for 15 mins while I went for a shower - no change.

I think this motherboard is toast. I don't know what I've done with the AM5 CPU cover so I cant currently RMA it. I want to try ordering replacement parts until I get a basic working system, then attempt to RMA the faulty bits.

Trouble is I don't know if anyone ships a A620 or B650 board that supports Ryzen 9000 out of the box. I'm reluctant to try Bios flashback with another board.

I also giving thought to kicking AMD to the kerb, save all the ffaf & going 12th gen Intel instead.

Thoughts?

Why not grab a b840 or b850 motherboard

Did you clear the CMOS correctly when you were troubleshooting?

1. Power off the computer and unplug the power cord.
2. Use a jumper cap to short JBAT1 for about 5-10 seconds.
3. Remove the jumper cap from JBAT1.
4. Plug the power cord and Power on the computer.

You can also try taking the coin battery out as well.

And did you follow these steps for flashing the BIOS originally? No need for CPU or Memory to be installed.

1. Please download the latest BIOS file that matches your motherboard model from the MSI® website.
2. Rename the BIOS file to MSI.ROM, and save it to the root of the USB storage device.
3. Connect the power supply to CPU_PWR1 and ATX_PWR1. (No need to install CPU and memory.)
4. Plug the USB storage device that contains the MSI.ROM file into the Flash BIOS Port on the rear I/O panel.
5. Press the Flash BIOS Button to flash BIOS, and the LED starts flashing.
6. The LED will be turned off when the process is completed.

I don't think you need to kick AMD to the kerb, I flashed my board this way and it was a doddle. Worked as expected. Reading your first post does sound like you may have gone nuclear too soon.

@Firegod Thanks for trying to help. I would like to think I am an experienced PC Builder, in this case I think I've made a mistake, I'll admit that. I thought Bios flashback wouldn't be an issue, turns out it was.
I should have bought a B850 board so I wouldn't need to use bios flashback in the first place for a 9600x.

Didn't mean for that to sound arsey in anyway. Just read it back to myself. Was just trying to share the info I had found online, to help out. :) I didn't even know about the coin battery not being a thing anymore!

Update time folks.

I FINALLY GOT IT TO WORK!
I bought a new PSU, I wanted one for my backup rig (A BeQuiet 850watter, Tier A Jobby ) & I bought an MSI B850 board too.
Thought I'd try it one last time with the new PSU & it booted! Thought it might have been the old PSU but its booting with that too
So installed the SSD & Linux mint, typing this post on said new rig!
Gonna keep the B850, when I get the time & money I'll upgrade the backup/'gaming rig' at some point in the future.

I'm glad its working now, I hate RMA'ing stuff.
