So I've managed to get a 4080 for free (won it) so I thinking if I sell my am4 kit and gpu I can fund a 7800x3d upgrade but its still quite early in the AM5 lifespan....is jumping up a good idea or should I hold off?

I made the switch from AM4 to AM5, there's still a few bugs to iron out, but there was with AM4 in the beginning too, I don't regret it, it is noticeabley faster than AM4, once I'm through post my pc boots in about 6 seconds to the windows lock screen, and as usual, AMD will support the socket for a few generations, so you'll only have to change the chip later down the line if you want to upgrade, unlike intel who change the socket every 2 generations, even by 1 pin, that's what made me switch to team red to start with.

I was thinking of going Intel this time but decided to go AM5 for the drop in upgrade in a few years. It’s a difficult choice as performance is almost the same, Intel win some and AMD win others. Been using AM5 for ~5 months and not had any issues yet. I don’t know if I would recommend buying any hardware now, Manufacturers are doing some messed up ****.

What your system spec ?
5800x, 3070, 32gb ram @ 3800mhz cl16 tightened right up.
I would never have considered it but with getting the 4080 for nothing, I thought I would buy a 5800x3d with the money from the 3070....but then if I sold the rest of my set up I could probably go 7800x3d and only have to spend £150-200... There's no way I'll be able to get off am4 if I don't do it now I feel given the situation Ive found myself in.

I'd say go for 7800x3d if you only need cpu/memory/mobo.

The expo 6000 cl30 kits are pretty cheap at £130 and £180 b650 mobo is more than enough.

£440 + £130 + £180 = £750

I'd say you might get £550 for your parts.

For £200 thats a pretty big upgrade.

going 5800x3d will prob bank £100 or so as selling gpu will prob cover the cpu, so what ever you make on the 5800x you're in the black

I'm not seeing CL30 kits for £130, probably need to look harder

Yeah thankfully I don't care about RGB so got g.skill trident neo z5 6000mhz cl30 after I spotted the price had dropped this morning so 7800x3d and b650e has been ordered as well.
It was now or never really, I don't like jumping in early to newer tech but the chance has happened so I'm going in!

Agreed, I decided it was nearly as cheap to build an AM5 system, and move my AM4 down to office work, as it was it buy something to do office tasks.
