A chimp genius can complete a computer memory test in less time than it takes the average person to blink - and much faster than any human rival. But do the world's cleverest animals enjoy these cognitive tasks?

Ayumu, who was born and raised in Japan's Kyoto University, can remember the location and order of a set of numbers in record time. Sixty milliseconds to be precise.

.....

Very impressive stuff.

Ayumu the chimp features in Super Smart Animals on Wednesday 8 February, 20:00 GMT on BBC One.

Not to take away from what is actually a very impressive achievement; however, surely a human that has spent 11 years of his life doing memory training is also going to be very impressive...

I'd also probably call this recognition skills rather than memory skills. Remembering a pattern of 13 numbers isn't particularly difficult. Recognising a patter of 13 numbers in half a second though is incredibly quick reactions...

When they stop eating their own young and living in trees I'll pay attention.

I think its not just memory, but recognition. As others have said though, if you spent 11 years doing just this and got chocolate each time you would be good at it as well.

Fat.....but with a good memory.

Chimps are actually better at certain memory related tests than humans. There is a reason for it, but i just can't remember :p, this may be one of those tests.

I remember reading an article(was posted on these forums i think) a while back with a female chimp and a similar test, where she had to recall the locations of things and she could do it many times better/faster than a human ever could.
