I've just bought a Samsung UE55MU6400. I was planning to buy an Amazon Fire TV 4K for the new season of The Grand Tour when I realised there was an Amazon app on the TV. I logged into my Amazon account last night to see what the first season looked like. The intro to the show looked like it was very low-res, not even 720p.

Should the Amazon app on the Samsung TV be able to stream 4K or do I need to buy the Amazon Fire TV K4 to get 4K? I've googled and looked in the TV manual but can't find a definitive answer.

How long did you watch for? It can take a moment for the quality to improve once it figures out how fast your connection is. Could also be a wi-fi issue though, are you having the same problem on other apps?

10 seconds or so. Haven't bothered with any of the other apps as I don't really care about them. It was just my realisation that I could save myself £70 if I don't need the Amazon Fire TV 4K that I was checking on the TV.

But you reckon that it should do 4K?

I always find it far better to connect by network cable and not Wi-Fi
Yeah I do mean to run cables to my living room to hook up my consoles, TV and Blu-ray player but that'll take a while to get sorted.

It's extremely unreliable and glitchy on a 4k Panny here, but ok on a UHD Sammy KS7000. When it works it looks fine, even with standard HD content.

Try known UHD content like the Grand Tour.

It does take a good 30 seconds to a min to ramp up to 4k, as does Netflix, on the 49 inch version but once there it’s stable on my internet. I don’t know why as the YouTube app seems to get to 4k before I can call up the stats for geeks data.

Hi all. Thanks for the updates. I checked the app again last night and it was in glorious 4K. It was then I realised that considering it's Hammond, May and Clarkson I may not actually want 4K Grand Tour. :D

Having watched the last couple of episodes I don't think I was ever watching in 4K. I've paused the episodes and noticed that it says "1080p". Guess I will need to get the Amazon Fire TV 4K after all. :(

Are you watching the correct one?

There’s 2 to choose from when selecting the grand tour on the amazon app, one is UHD and one is HD.

I've just bought a UE40MU6120, after our ancient CRT died.

Amazon app does do 4k but the first time I launched it, it showed some horrible sub-SD thing. Came back to it later and it was fine.

Sd can look very good, still impressed with a good dvd on opposite 983.

It's compression which hurts pq.

I have the 65 inch 6400 and do get a delay of around 15 seconds or so in it getting to output at 4k in the Amazon app. You do have to select the 4k version of TGT though.

I have a 6400 and the in-built Amazon app is fine streaming 4k over wifi. Takes mine only a few seconds to clear up, and that's using the bog standard sky router (2 floors down).

I really wish it (and the likes of netflix, skyq etc etc) was clever enough to understand the hdmi output is set to 4k and would at least ask (if not automatically) switch over to the 4k version.

The parents have a 4k tv now, but everytime I go over to visit they are watching BBC1 (non hd), and stuff like man in the high castle (again, not the 4k version).

yeah bit like my freesat HD box, when I go to BBC 1 SD, it then asks if you want to watch the HD version.

Why is this needed? If you go to BBC 1 SD, it should automatically switch to the HD channel.
