Customers can pick up deliveries from shopping centers

Etail giant Amazon has plans to install a network of item collection 'lockers' in shopping centers in the UK.

The move is set to echo a similar trial of delivery lockers across the chain of 7-Eleven stores in the US. The UK lockers which allow customers to pick up items ordered from the web site are to appear in secondary areas near public toilets and such in British shopping centers around the country.

Aimed specifically at customers that find home delivery inconvenient, the first of the etail giant's lockers have already appeared at the One New Change shopping center in London according to a Retail Week report (paywall).

Geekwire tracked down a not-yet-operational locker in a 7-Eleven store in Seattle and took photos. The system large locker rack system has a screen and a keypad for entering a delivery code at which point the appropriate drawer unlocks.

The London-based lockers may go live as early as next week. Presumably some official Amazon PR will follow shortly.

i have just seen this. On one hand i think its a good idea on another it just takes one dodgy delivery driver for things to go pear shaped. Fortunately i am able to have stuff delivered to work but i am sure there are a lot of people out there that cannot due to security or company policy...

Discuss.. :)

:(
Only with amazon deliveries.

As I don't own the bouse I can't install a parcel box, so a scheme like this would be great. But onlupy if anyone could deliver to it.

I'm failing to see a use for these when returning the package to the nearest postal office works perfectly well. What's the difference between driving to your local post office or nearest Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys or where ever they install these?

Post office has silly opening times, it now takes 48hrs to get back to the sorting office (my last parcel has been more than 48hrs and it's not at sorting office yet).
This they can always make a delivery and as long as it's not out the way you can pick it up at ease and at your own time.

Just a shame it's amazon only, makes it a bit pointless.

Because generally, post offices are crap. I beleive with this system you just type in some code and away you go with your parcel.

So it's online shopping with none of the convenience of online shopping? ;)

Well it has all the convenience of online shopping with probably half inconvenience of having to wait in for a parcel to be delivered which seems to be instigate the most moaning on these forums from people.

Pretty sure someone on dragons den tried to make some system where parcels could be delivered to your house without you having to be there. Didn't get any funding though. If they tweaked there idea to this though, I imagine things would be different

There's lots of them. You just need a space and to own the house, so not suitable to all people. It's just a metal box, secured to the floor and a lock that the delivery guy can lock. But can only have one delivery per day.

Would be useful if missing a parcel where I live didn't mean having to pick it up at the sorting office a mile or two away 5 hours after attempted delivery which is usually around 11AM so I'll only just be home by the time it's ready anyway :p.

This would be interesting if they offered reduced delivery rates especially. Espeicially when ordering a couple things. Might speed things up to.

All too often these days ordering something from Amazon things that used to arrive next day seem to take up to 3. Their despatch times have got quite bad i find
