Watch out! Rudd is about!

"Ms Rudd says she has no intention of banning end-to-end encryption"

Well, that's because you can't deary

"but hopes companies will voluntarily stop using it"

I hope your government isn't a complete inept shambles...

Seems neither of us are going to get what we want

"'Real people' don't need sophisticated security"...

Yeah, just like "real people" don't need to worry about locking their doors, keeping their bank details secret, or telling their children not to get into cars with strangers.

Only bad people need security to protect themselves from good people, not the other way around.

****ing moron

It's way beyond time that we actually got people into government briefs that actually know what the hell they are doing. I understand that a lot of the heavy lifting is done by the civil service but having people at the top with irrelevant qualifications and experience isn't helping.

It just feels like a random, "oh you can have a go at this job now, GL HF!" situation.

would love to be in that meeting with Whatsapp where Amber Rudd asks them nicely to stop using encryption :D

What's more worrying is the "metadata" she won't discuss in public. Which leads me to believe her version of "metadata" extends to content as well.

Could not have worded it better myself.

This is just an excuse for a free holiday to California. Like Whatsapp are going to do anything other than politely tell her to ****off.

I think everyone who meets her should just laugh really obnoxiously in her face and leave, also film it and put it on Youtube.

While a standard tactic of the left these days, it might be better to educate and debate people rather than act like 4 year olds. People holding unreasonable positions such as hers should be an easy target.

I hope Whatsapp record the meeting and make it public. If encryption only benefits terrorists then there should be no issues with them sharing the content of the meeting with the general public.

You can't 'educate' some people though. People tend to have incredibly inflexible positions which don't shift no matter how much evidence or data you show them to support a different position.

Do you think that no-one has tried to educate Amber Rudd and the rest of the government already?

People with unreasonable positions are often the hardest people to convince of the truth.

What she is trying to do will fail, because it doesn't work the way she thinks it does.

Her going to lecture people on technology in silicon valley is like me going to lecture people on rocket science at NASA. They will have a good laugh and throw some difficult questions to make her look stupid, then completely ignore any demands/requests.

It's scary to me that a person like Amber Rudd is made Home Secretary and she doesn't realise how dangerous removing encryption would be.

I only hope that if it was made law to banish encryption, that we get lots and lots of embarrassing leaks from MP chat logs...

In a somewhat related note - I feel like VPNs will be banned in the UK before the year is up.
