Ambilight, Govee... Worth it?

For a number of years I had a standard Hue light strip for TV backlighting but a month or so ago I replaced it with the Lytmi Fantasy 3 setup. It uses a HDMI passthrough box opposed to a camera setup like Gove, personally I think it's brilliant.

It can handle up to 8K@60Hz or 4K@120Hz and the responsiveness is lightning fast; for both movies and gaming it really helps with immersion and is not distracting in the slightest.

My daughter has a Hue Ambilight TV and I'd say the Lytmi far out performs it. Can highly recommend it.

That looks pretty good, don't think that was available when I was looking

I got the Govee T2 about a month ago on a whim. My experience:

  • It's VERY dependent on what you're watching, and it mostly doesn't enhance the viewing experience a huge amount.
  • It is nice on bright/colourful movies, in particular animated movies like Into the Spider-Verse, Akira are nice, and Blade Runner 2049 and similar films it's decent with. I don't go overboard though - my brightness is usually at like 20% and the saturation I've set really low (<5%)
  • The T2 is reactive using a small camera you place on top of the TV (though you can mount it underneath as I have). There is a small but noticeable lag when it changes colour, which might drive you insane if you focus too hard on it.
  • When watching something that doesn't need it, it can be somewhat distracting e.g. a person shows up on screen, there'll be an isolated patch of reddish/orangey light following their skin/head.
Some control via HDMI. I think the trouble with these is if the thing you're watching doesn't connect via HDMI, it doesn't work, so your in-built TV apps, those videos won't work.
