Ambleside, what is there to do?

My parents are booking up a cottage there for a week in the summer and I get to crash it for a free mountain biking holiday so I'd be interested in things to do in and around Ambleside too! :)

I plan on doing a few days biking and walking up Scafell Pike another day, just need things to do on the off days..

You dont need to plan anything, just get there and see what takes your fancy!

I take the Mrs there during summer, we tend to go for a walk around the troutbeck area and take in the views of coniston and windmere then head down to ambleside for a drink.

Lovely place so long as the weather is on your side

Ambleside - a fantastic base to explore the Lakes, even if a bit twee. A weekend is far too short a time there :)

As to walks, if you are feeling brave, try Jake's Rake, having done it, I can say that it looks worse than it really is but it does look pretty damned scary. You can find details of other walks HERE and HERE.

As to eating, I would heartily recommend Zeffirellis. They used to have live Jazz at the weekend and to do a deal for a meal and a film which was a good way to spend a romantic evening. There is also a brilliant Vegetarian Restaurant at Lancrigg but it IS expensive!

i went on a nice long walk from Ambleside, round Rydal water then back through Loughrigg fell when i was there a few years back

I lost my car keys on Loughrigg Fell some years back, didn't exactly please my mates as I was the driver!
Someone walking over the fell to Elterwater later that day found them and handed them in to the police...........phew and what luck!
I seem to remember there was a good pub in Elterwater, The Brittania I think, decent shortish walk from Ambleside.

Get over to Cartmel, best sticky toffee pudding going there.

Oh no, you've just made me think of that damn tasty pudding. Now I'm really hungry! The Cartmel one is amazing. The village is well worth a visit too.
