The colleagues over at the Dutch Tweakers website here in the Netherlands had a nice find. Apparently a company called Oakville Mehlville Computers in the USA is offering to sell 12-core (physical) AMD Opteron 6174-processors on eBay in tray's of four. These puppies are yet to be released by AMD and are clocked at 2.2 GHz.
These processors are tied to an unavailable (in retail) socket G34, which Oakville Mehlville Computers does not offer. The 12-core processors would have 12 physical CPU cores and a shared L3-cache of 12MB. Each core also would have 512KB L2 cache. The processors are capable of running DDR3 memory at 1333 MHz.
You guys have heard about these processors under codename Magny-cours. According to the eBay post, these are retails samples .. not engineering samples.
Well, if you have 7000 USD to spare, they are sold in a tray of four, yeah .. that would be 48-cores slapped on one motherboard. Here's a photo of the processors:

I'll take four.. :p

I liked the fact that in the article it says the seller will spec you a server to go with them for £20k but no returns lol

Erm - or why not just go straignt to 12? :p
:o

Heck, why not just do 16 and be done with it LOL :)

Isn't folding still quicker on gfx cards or with this many cores has it finally become the same rate (if that makes sense)?

edit: oh yea I just realized what I said on the previous post. This IS the 12-core I just assumed that the 6 core would be released before the 12 core lmao this has got to be my dumbest post of the month!

editedit: still think they should go with the power of 2 though :P

How long before AMD have the listing removed though.

Oh an folding is better on GPUs unless you have an i7 that can run bigadv work units as they produce about 20-30k ppd per day, its because GPUs are a more task specific core

@Strawberry, you would need GTX295s not 5970s as ATi cards do not fold all that well due to lack of support for CUDA and there not being a client that can efficiently utilise the ATi GPUs cores
