AMD 1700x upgrade to 5000 series X nonX G ?

Hi guys ive been considering upgrading my 1700X for some time but left it but with the release of the 7000 series, I thought it may be a good time to upgrade.
I have checked and noticed my ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO 370x now supports the 5000 series so I can get a 5000 instead of 3000.

The only issue other than the price, the models are a little confusing I have is what to choose You have the 5600, 5600x, 5600g, 5700x 5700g, 5800x
5500,5600, 5600x, 5600 all seam very similar
5800x, 5700G 5700x all seam very similar


What's the difference ?

I'm leaning towards 5800x, 5600x 5600 due to the availability and price but knowing more would be helpful

The 5600 and 5600X are nearly identical (6 core, Zen 3), but the 5600X has a higher boost clock.
The 5600G and 5700G have onboard graphics (6 core, Zen 3 and 8 core, Zen 3), but half the cache of the 5600X and 5700X and they only support PCI-E 3.0. Best avoided unless you don't like graphics cards.
The 5700X and 5800X are nearly identical (8 core, Zen 3), but the 5800X has a higher boost clock.

The 5600G/5700G usually perform between the lower model and the equivalent X CPU, for example: the 5700G is often faster than the 5600, but slower than the 5700X.

The 5600/5700X have lower power consumption and heat output, in theory, which I've read (on here) confirmed with the 5700X (at least, versus earlier 5800X CPUs).

I believe the 5600 and 5700X are more likely to be a later stepping, but I don't know much about that so perhaps someone else can help.

I will be keeping or upgrading my graphics card

I'm assuming I could get the same or better over clock from the non X ?

I'm think 5600 and the 5700x maybe a good choice for me but the 5800x is more widely available used.


What do you think about the 3900x in comparison it seam to the same price as a 5800x on the used market but with more cores and threads.

I think Steve talks about the overclock potential at the end of the video.

Unless you're doing really CPU heavy stuff like rendering with Blender, I'd consider the 3900X obsolete for gaming, especially with the discounts available on the 5700X/5800X.

What is the power consumption and heat output issue with the 5800x ? could you point me to the link ?

It's not an issue, they're just often thought of as the hottest running. I've heard that it improved with later stepping 5800X CPUs, but I haven't been keeping up with this. I think there was a thread on the forum not long ago "5700X/5800X same price, which would you buy?"

One theory is that the 5800X concentrates the most heat in a single die, whereas the 5900X is able to share it between two dies.

There is £10 difference between the 5700x and 5800x new. I'd just get a 5800x and run it in Eco Mode via BIOS option. Makes it a 5700x.

Architecturally, they're the same. Just the 5800x runs at 105w TDP in order to boost to the higher clock speeds. Whereas the 5700x runs at 65w and doesn't boost as high.

Just to add to my two pennys worth. The 5800x3d is a gaming monster. If you want your system to last many years get this. When you upgrade your CPU dont forget to upgrade your motherboard bios and AMD chipset drivers.

Thanks but the issue is I don't have the budget for a 5800x3d, I may just manage to get a 5800x if not ill need to get a 5600x and upgrade again later.

Im going to update the bios today to stay on the safe side.

They are both great CPU's, try to get the 5800x if you can as it will last you longer as the consoles have 8 cores and modern games are starting to use them. Spiderman is a good example.

Your cooler has a max TDP of 140w. The 5800x is 105w so you will be fine. Dont forget to order thermal paste.
