AMD 2xx series how did they get it so wrong?

Either DSR it-faulty card, get a replacement or get a 780 and pay the premium, or ask CS if you can change the tim yourself and see if it's fixable as some of the efforts of tim application leave half the core bare.

Nvidia fanboy.

:p

I've only ever owned one Nvidia card in the last few years, a GTX680, reference fan.

I could take that GPU to the maximum of its stability, it was far quieter than what my R9 290 is, which needs to be loud to running its absolute maximum (Mine can do 1200MHZ)

Yeah imagine if they were total retards and released a driver that bricked cards.

Then imagine a company releasing drivers a while back with crap PQ in order to get higher FPS. Or maybe even one that laughed, and their fanboys, at the gtx480 then went and relased an equivalent product.

I had the reference 680 too. It wasn't too bad but when overclocked it was too loud for me.

Judging by this weekend's "Today Only Deal" on OCUK's front page, AMD must have got something wrong. There were 50 290's avaialable yeasterday morning at £309 and are 40 left now. This means that one of the UK's largest PC Graphics retailers has only been able to sell 10 290's over 2 days when sold at the UK's lowest price.

As performance is great, heat must be what is putting people off. Didn't Gibbo say that he had stocks of over 1000 cards?

I think the 290's an absolute beast of a card in pure performance, and tremendous price/performance.

I can do 1200MHZ 24/7 on my core, my memory clock's a little weird, with GPU Tweak I can do 1650MHZ, but MSI Afterburner craps out over 1500MHZ.

I can out bench lower clocks 290X's (Say 1100MHZ) so it's absolutely storming performance.

But I would want a third party cooled one.

Ya know I was happy with my sli 480s. You just stick a kinda tunnel thing over them and they ran 85ish. Good enough to both be under 100% load all day. Plus no heater needed in winter was awesome but I sold them in Summer when gaming got uncomfortable.

The 480 did run hot and pretty noisy, but it was easily the fastest card of it's time. The 290's problem is that it is only the 4th fastest card after 780TI, 290X, Titan, yet runs noiser and hotter than the 480 dustbuster ever did. Some traits are easier to forgive if you are top of the pile.

The Sapphire is also at £309.95. I can see some preferring the Sapphire brand name over HIS (even though they are just ref cards), so you can't infer accurately from the today only sales. Besides anyone who didn't buy on release is going to be awaiting non-ref coolers as they would have at historical card releases. A £14 saving on HIS is unlikely to change their minds unless their willpower is not up to it.

Irrespective off brand, is it not strange that the latest card sold at the cheapest UK price and advertised on the front page of the UK largest graphics card retailer only sells 10 units in two days? These cards ate not selling as well as they deserve to because everyone knows the coolers are so poor. I cancelled my 290X order to await the 290, but I will not buy until 3rd party coolers have arrive and proven they can tame the fiery beast.

It does look strange but still isn't enough data to meaningfully speculate. If over the last 2 days they had also sold say 20 Sapphire ref 290's at £309.95 and 20 other branded 290's (more expensive but an extra year warranty/familiar name/good reputation), it paints a different picture.

I would think that if not all, then nearly all, purchasers of a 290 are computer/gpu 'savvy'. and clearly the cooler is not good enough

Given the fact that in a few weeks 'new' better cooled versions will be to hand and prices across the board remain fluid (I know that nvidia have said 'no more' but do not believe - sales will dictate) , if I were looking to buy I'd wait for a bit - even if I were watercooling I might wait BUT if not def. wait and see !

£329 and a cheap cooler , or £349 and a decent cooler. Come on, whats £20 when spending over £300 on a card to play games.

I may be misinterpreting the situation but would believe that Amd's partners would prefer room to differentiate their differently (better) cooled products from standard cooled - they can eke out a little more profit this way :):(
