AMD had all the time in the world to design a gpu with a decent stock cooler that surpasses the 780/titan. Instead they designed a chip that is too hot too slow and pales in comparison to the excellent 7xxx series. And then we got the golden samples and throttling issues. It's so bad that it makes the gtx 480 that got so much criticism look amazing. Is amd's cpu failures draining funds from the gpu department? Nvidia has not been such a clear choice since the dreadful ati 2900.

Nope.

They aimed for a lower price-point. That is what AMD said from the start. The non-reference cards will have better coolers. No different than with the HD6970 or HD5870 TBH. Remember,Nvidia had to price drop its cards due to the R9 290 and R9 290X pricing,and AMD might have to bundle 1GB of VRAM more,but have a 30% die size advantage. Its probably no different from the situation with the GTX200 series and the HD4870 and HD4890 1GB cards(the Nvidia cards had less VRAM but a larger die).

to give my 2 pennies worth, the Nvidia cards are amazing powerhouses but at the same time what AMD has put out for their price points is pretty damn impressive

looking at the benchmark threads in this forum is so depressing for amd fans like me. the 780 is such a better choice than the 290x.
 
I don't see how the 290x "pales in comparison" to the 780Ti. Its not as fast and its cooler isn't as good but its £110 cheaper and the performance is only 10% off at most. It also has an extra gig of vram which is very helpful at high resolutions. Thats hardly "pales in comparison" territory. Both are fantastic cards.

The real winner is the 290 pro. Once that thing gets third party coolers then its going to be a steal. Its a lot closer to the top boys performance then any lower tier card should get.
 
It isn't that bad. The 290 at £300 is pretty good value. I would rather have a non ref overclocked 780 than either a 290 or 290x though. cooler, quieter, less power use and almost at the 290 price point after selling the games.

Fact is though, this generation Nvidia have had the upper hand over AMD with their GK110 chip. They were able to cash in on the crazy priced Titan and the fairly crazy priced 780 ( release prices anyway) whilst AMD could not offer any competition. Meanwhile they could just place there GK104 chips to match AMD's tiers of cards (680 for 7970, 670 for 7950 e.t.c)

Only now has AMD finally released something to compete with GK110 and it still doesn't do it that well.

Nvidia were able to just keep the fully unlocked GK110 chip back until AMD released something that competed. Then they could release it and take back the fastest GPU crown.

i think unless they go crazy with custom pcb's i cant see the 290 being much cooler with just a msi/gigabyte cooler slapped on top, if one of them huge after market coolers struggle keep it under mid 80's what hope do they have

it seems like they released a water only card lol
crazy value yes but also just crazy :)
 
I know the cards are supposed to be very hot and very loud but they are so fast and such amazing value that I don't care if it's hot and I won't notice the noise while I'm gaming. Almost certainly waiting for custom coolers but nvidia cards are usually too expensive whenever I go to buy.
 
Everything has a price. I bought a GTX 480 which was a similarly flawed card ( great performance, but awful heat/power consumption). Release price was silly.

When they dropped to £190 though.....now that was great value performance a the time.
 
Because value for money/mantle/card runs hot/true audio/ cant afford NVIDIA/ NVIDIA overpriced/ NVIDIA faster/ Great storm of 85.
I thought the children arguing on console wars was bad, not seen anything more pathetic until I saw GPU brand loyalty, actually hilarious and sad at the same time.
