hey

Right at the moment i have brought some bits for my new build. I have a ati x800gto16, 1.5gb of ram (ocz + geil value) and im still looking for a mobo but i already have my eye on the one i want.

I havnt got loads of money to spend but im looking for a retail amd cpu thats 64bit. The 3000+ newcastle is right in my price range and seems ok. Is it any good? Also will it bottleneck the rest of my system? Everything else it have isnt really anything special, i dont have raptor drives or any of the like.

i mainly play games such as BF2 and strategy games.

thanks :)

For games the most important aspect of the system is the gfx card. That processor is ok and should be fine playing games on medium settings.

medium settings? If i have a x800gto16 i want to atleast to play medium/high settings. I only run at 1024x768 res with no AA or AF most of the time will that make a difference? Well i need a decent processor but i cant really stretch my budget that much. Whats the next best processor up from the 3000+?

The 3000+ is a great processor. As above, the graphics card makes a bigger difference and the X800GTO16 is a good card - I'd imagine that you should be able to play most games at 1280x1024 with AA & AF

I have an Opteron 146 with an X800Pro and I can play all of the latest games, save FEAR, with 4xAA and 16xAF

ah ok cool. I'm looking at the 3000+ newcastle processor and the 3000+ venice processor. Which one is better and whats the differences? I know they are different sockets but what else makes them different?

There are 3000+ Venice chips on Socket 754 if you hunt around

Basically the Venice core runs cooler, overclocks better and features SSE3 instructions. I'd go for the Venice core out of the two

If you go Socket 754 you're limited to the A64 3700+ whereas you can get an FX57/FX60 on Socket 939 (far faster chips)

I got a NewCastle 3000 in a DFI Mobo... Not exactly ground breaking, however its capable.

Very little difference between that and a Tampon to be honest.

Overall, I am not exactly stunned by the performance of any Socket 754 system, bar the Clawhammer 3700... Of which is also in a DFI Mobo.

Dunno about the 3000+ but I have a 3500+ Venice core and it's bloody quick.

I'm actually thinking about getting a couple of 3000+ as part of the Folding farm I'm building, if you get one, let us know how it fares, will you?

Stan :)

Remember skt754 doesnt have dual channel ram. Dont bother with a 3200, a 3000 will clock the same id have thought

but the thing is my last pc fried because of me messing with it. i only want to overclock it when its needed, not from brand new.
