AMD 3100 or 2600X

More speculation.

I'd like to see the evidence on Death Stranding and Star Citizen. That would be interesting.

The OP should take any money saved on the CPU and invest it on a better graphics card (especially as it sounds like they are going second hand). Instead of pouring money into a CPU that might pay him back in a year or two.

Speculation.

Haha.

I've from the get go, as stated, pointed out that you can get a 2600 for LESS than a 3100 -- which is your recommendation here.

So I agree, the OP should get a 2600 or equivalent and spend the rest on a better GPU! He'll have a better CPU in the long term too, win-win!

A 3100 is £88.32 brand new.

Not on OCUK it isn't, it's £110 100 here.

You know fine well we're not allowed to discuss prices elsewhere, and frankly I'm totally unaware of that CPU being even close to that price point in the UK for anywhere that holds actual stock.

I would agree that for £80-90 the 3100 is a decent buy.

So now you want to compare the retail price of OCUK against a speculative price on MM which doesn't even exist yet.

Put a request in on the Members Market for a 2600 or similar, I've seen a few of them go dirt cheap.

Even ignoring the deal I'm talking about which expires in 2 days, it's below <£100 at any other retailer.

edit:

In fact it is at OCUK as well.

I have seen MM prices of the chip much lower, which is why I recommended it as I did, the MM prices for the 2600 or equivalent have been low post launch of the 3100/3300X (perhaps because of them).

Prior to lock down I bought multiple brand new 1600 AF's and a 2600 for around the £80 mark, the 1600 AF basically being a 2600 under a different name.

For that price I absolutely would not view a £100-110 3100 a good buy, let alone a £120-150 3300X which is what we've seen.

You'll also note I edited my post to suggest the correct 3100 price on OCUK before you responded to me.

You can call it speculation, but in the long term should a person want to keep hardware anyone with knowledge of the direction games and software in general are going would lean toward more threads. More so in gaming as we know the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft due this year will be using processors extremely similar to the 3700X.

Current games are just fine on the likes of a 2600 unless you're chasing frames, in a year or two I suspect quads even with HT will start to suffer. Speculation? Perhaps, but it's based upon an informed opinion - there's even current games which struggle immensely on quads. Detroit: Become Human on launch wouldn't even work with a quad, it still struggles with old i7's and the recommended hardware is a hexa-core.

Ahh man If I had the 2700x in hand and hadn't already sold it to a friend for £75 I would have stuck it on the MM. I've done some benchmarking of the 2700x vs the 3600 and there really isn't much in it outside of certain games like csgo ( 300fps vs 400+). I think with that in mind I would have to agree with @Gray2233. Sure the 3300x and 3100 are decent chips but that core count, as it is today would worry me.

looking at the video the 3100 looks a good chip for £100. I bought one yesterday for my second rig thinking its a bit more future proof than a 2000 series ryzen. Was after the 3300x but could not find one any where so made do with the 3100
