Hi everyone i have an AMD 3800+ 2.4 and i think its to slow for my vista im running and so im thinking of going for a 4600+ X2 2.6 is this worth the money? i dont really want to go over to intel right yet as i dont whant to buy another motherboard atm i will change for good quad cores when the time comes...

Why not just overclock what you've got at the moment? No point in forking ou for a new chip for just 200MHz when you could get that and potentially more for free!

I had an X2 4600 and it runs at 2.4Ghz, the X2 3800 runs at 1.8Ghz, unless you are already overclocking them.
How much memory does your system have as Vista is a memory monster and need more than XP.
Whats your system spec ?

We never really answered the OPs question! Sorry, I didn't notice that you're currently on a single core. Maybe you should try overclocking what you have already to see if that gives you a boost, if not, then consider going the dual core route. I don't think it'd be too bad an investment anway considering more programs will become multithreaded in the future and Vista does make better use of multiple threads than say XP.

how do you think everyone on here learned? by reading up and trial and error! if you look in your motherboard's manual on how to clear cmos you are pretty much certain that you will be able to restore a failed overclock within seconds!

As you can probably imagine, 200mhz will be a very naff boost to say the least. If it was me I'd either wait, or go the whole hog and upgrade your mobo now. Quad core will be a bit of a red herring for well over a year. There are very few apps that can actually use the xtra processors. The high end X2s and C2Ds are way more than most people need atm.

As above, consider 2GB as an option - makes a big difference, espessially in games.

when i try to overclock i change 2 things.

the first the multiplier...i normaly set it to x10
the second being the cpu freq...i start at 200 then move up 5 at a time

what else do i need to do as i dont want to supply to much voltage or ive heard the cpu will melt so what other options am i meant to change

after i get the processor to about 220 freq. i have to sert it back to defult because it stops booting up the screen just flashes any help is great. thanks

not changing the voltage wont make it melt, it wont cause it any damage at all. The damage starts happening when you up the voltage conciderable amounts and dont have adequate cooling.

ok so what do i need to change. i just tryed again now with no sucess.

i leaft multiplier at auto and left CPU Voltage at Defult

changed the cpu frq. to 1.05 and my processor went from 2.41 to 2.61 i then went back and changed it upto 1.10 and my pc went to blue screen and rebooted so i changed settings back to defult settings and now its fine. what did i do wrong. i have a phenoix bios setup i think.

urmm, thats usually what you do? maybes its linked with memory or something through dividers, im not knowledgeable on that though, my overclocks have all just been up the fsb, and tweek memory timings. better wait for someone a bit more educated
