AMD: 3D Is Dead

3D is a take it or leave it scenario with games, personally I enjoy it a lot and it got me back into gaming, but the story is a non event imo as I already stated, AMD never directly supported it in the first place.

If this were the case AMD would have been best placed to affirm their position to be panel based 3D gaming and NOT the statement which has been made which is 3D gaming period.

As I stated earlier, AMD never 'supported' 3D in the first place, they always left it up to someone else so they wouldn't have to affirm anything.

It is plain reading to see that matt was talking about panels, NOT VR, where is there mention of VR/OR in the article, your poor bullish attempts at pulling fact out of thin air with the purpose of spreading misinformation implying matt/AMD was talking about not supporting VR was pretty pathetic.

Either put up source that AMD isn't going to support OC in any shape or form or leave it be.

@Greg,

Don't know if you have heard, this is Nvidia's new toy:

Looks like a contender for competing with OR.:)

@Matt,

Looks promising and in very early stages (thanks for the link). It was the first I had heard about it and hopefully not the last :)

THe vast majority of people don't game in 3d, many people with 120hz and/or 3d capable screens don't play most of their games in 3d, most people don't have 3d capable machines. It's not, has never and won't for the near future be a standard thing for everyone. For all the above reasons it will never be standard.

On the other side, I don't know ANYONE who dislikes higher res screens, everyone always wants more res and more power to drive higher res. I don't know anyone (personally) and only a very minor percentage of people on here, an enthusiasts forum, who want to upgrade for 3d gaming. After years and years it's barely mentioned. Eyefinity, 4k, or simply higher res screens get mentioned all day long every day, 3d... barely ever.

The AMD threads of late, the tech event, the conference, no one even mentioned missing 3d talk, no one said once "I hope they talk about 3d", lots of people have been talking about 4k, I think that says it all.

AMD would care about it if everyone on here was asking for it, no one is. Same for 3d tv's, the industry are saying no one wants 3d. The vast majority of tv discussions on this forum have 9 out of 10 people saying "tried 3d on my screen, didn't like it/don't care about it/seemed a waste" while 1 out of 10 say they love it and use it all the time, infact I'd say those who use it all the time probably number in the 1 out of 100.

Is it still the case that most 120Hz screens are TN panel type? That alone would put me off getting one (being the IPS ho I am :p)

Most are, I think there is a screen out there that is IPS which also overclocks to 144hz, maybe that was TN. I can't remember, I have two 120hz screens and use them only for 120hz, I've tried 3d, not interested at alll 120hz is great, 3d is poo.

Theres some Korean IPS panels that overclock upto 120+Hz but not guaranteed however while an improvement over 60Hz they aren't as good as a proper 120Hz TN - for some people its a good compromise between image quality and responsiveness though.

While the effect can be pretty good with 3D I've always felt like it was getting between me and the game - especially MP games it made it clunkier to take in what was going on and react properly to it. For most people ultimately a novelty and I leant my 3D vision kit to a few people who had 120Hz panels and none of them continued to use it after a week tops.

Big fan of 3d, lets hope nvidia catch wind of this and push it a little more.

Some games are absolutely breath taking in 3d, crysis series, tomb raider, batman etc...

got to admit though tomb raider is about the best 3d game lately that has been breath taking.

Batman was pretty stunning in 3D but I really couldn't push past about 20-30 minutes of playing like that - can't really explain it any better but it felt a bit like playing in a strait jacket just couldn't take things in or move/react as well as when playing in 2D.

I've tried 3D and have mixed feeling about it. Varies from game to game for me.
It's a pity to kill it off, especially since AMD don't really do much to support it directly (so also not really sure how AMD will kill it off).
To be honest I'm also not really that bothered at the minute about the OR either. Maybe once it matures and a game that interests me uses it, but like normal 3D it seems like a bit of a novelty.

As for higher resolutions, not really bothered by them either. I'm sure resolutions will move on and I'll move with them but while 1080p is the standard/average I'm happy with that and any thoughts I have of 1440p/1600p are pretty fleeting. I don't really see how that would enhance my gaming experience. Would probably have a less noticeable effect than 3D.
I'm sure once you've gotten used to 1440p/1600p it'd be hard to go back to 1080p the same as it is to drop down from 1080p. But the same is also true going from 120Hz to 60Hz. 60Hz can seem a bit juddery when you've gotten used to 120Hz. So I'll need to wait until they do 120Hz 4K displays I think!

^^ I swap between 2560x type resolutions and 1920x1080 on a daily basis and can't say I'd find it that hard to go back to 1920x1080 - that said 21:9 aspect ratio gaming at 4K would be pretty epic for some games not sure I'd want to go back after that.

This is kind of what my end goal was, 1440/1600 for main screen and 2D gaming, keep my beloved VG236H for 3D.

I really do hope at least Nvidia keep supporting 3D. Its the kind of feature that can force you to play a game more than once.

The first time I saw Two Face in Arkham City in 3D you had to peel my jaw from the floor, same with TR and especially Crysis 2, just something I've gotten a taste for and be most upset if they were to be dropped.

What is a surprise is AMD saying 3D is dead for them when I have little doubt 3D will be pushed on the new consoles. Lets hope AMD don't take the 'We have console control, screw PC' approach.

I recently moved to a BenQ XL2411T after about 5 years of my DGM VA panel.

When I was working on my sig in GIMP, I was pining for my VA again. Not to mention all the times I shift my head slightly and see a different brightness level.
