AMD 4000 clawhammer temps

Just fitted a brand new AMD 4000 clawhammer bought from OCUK. Temp under load (nerverwinter nights 2) reaching 60 DEG C. Is this reasonable or too high? No overclock just stock. Any comments appreciated.

Retail package so stock fan. Would extra case fan help? what size? location?. Previous chip was a 3500 venice, temps were a little lower than now. Windows performance is better although 3d06 score has dropped slightly.

A little on the high side but it's to be expected. The Clawhammers were the earlier 130nm cores which ran pretty toasty, especially with stock cooling. Would be a good idea to have one front intake fan and a rear exhast fan and maybe a side intake as well.

The temperatures aren't dangerously high however so I wouldn't particularly worry about it.

BTW, where'd you get a 4000+ Clawhammer on the site? only see San Diegos. If you're into overclocking any, and its indeed a clawhammer i'd have to say the 3500+ Venice would've been a better choice, cooler, much more overclocking potential, the 512kb less cache dosen't make that much difference and of course SSE3

Picked it up in the clearance section £50 retail Thurs last week, didn't state the core though. Didn't have much joy ocing the 3500 with my board, wouldn't post at any higher than 2.34 no matter how low the HT or ram was set, so thought for £50 give a 4000 a go. What fan will fit for better cooling? and will this chip/core out perform a stock 3500?

At stock speeds, this cpu should be doing pretty well against the 3500+, seeing that even when your 3500's overclocked the 4000 still has the advantage of 1mb L2 cache and 60mhz. Your overclocking efforts with this cpu will be rather small but it's still worthwhile. With a good cooler, ~2.6-2.7GHz can be expected from most Clawhammers with some extra volts.

Something along the lines of a Scythe Ninja Plus, Thermalright Ultra 120 or Thermaltake Big Typhoon will get you going. Note, these are pretty large coolers. Ensure your case has enough clearance.

Unless the poor overclock was not cpu related.

Not sure about the make of case, sorry. Another question guys, I ran 3d mark 06 last night after fitting chip and got a score of 4209, ran 3d mark again tonight and only scored 3904. My previous chip, a 3500 venice managed a score of 4412. Any ideas why the drop in performance?

Speedy, is that with stock cooling? how's your performance in 3dmark06? have you clocked your chip? Sorry so many questions.

Yeah the stock cooler that came with the fx-55, its overclocked from 2.6 to 2.78. The performance in 3dmark06 with a 1900xt overclocked to the xtx version and the score is 5093, but if I had a 8800card it would be much higher then that.

Edit: Is that a good score for a x1900xt card??

Thanks for the reply, I think I will try a small overclock to see how it goes with stock cooler before I replace it with an better fan/sink. My 3d mark scores have dropped from 4400 to 4200 to 3900 with no real explanation (rig as sig). Anyone got any ideas why?
