amd 5000 dual

Its a good processor although compared to the equivilant processors from intel its quite overpriced considering a E6300 mildly overclocked is faster.

Personally I would go the core 2 duo route if you are looking at a new build.

If of course you already have the AM2 motherboard then the 5000+ is still a decent performer.

Depends what your using it for?
Just get a 4200/4600 and overclock it to the same speed and save a few quid! Mine does 2.7ghz on air.

If you are building a new rig then Intel's C2D has to be the way to go. It is so much faster than anything AMD has to offer now or even in the foreseeable future. Even a lowly 6300 overclocked will give a FX62 a good seeing to. There simply is no contest.

That is if he does want to overclock. Something he has not stated and nobody has asked, as per usual.

If you do not want to overclock and if you have the money for a 5000+ then i would still pay a little more, go intel and get an E6600.

If you're going to build a new PC from scratch, go Conroe. An E6600 from this site will cost you about £2-£3 more than an AM2 5000+ and although it's 200MHz slower at stock speeds, it would be faster than the AMD chip by a long way. The overclockability of the 6600 would almost certainly be higher too, some getting from 2.4GHz to 4GHz!

what is the cpu to be used for?

Doesn't matter. C2D smashes the AMD in everything.

Get a E6400 + 2Gb PC6400 + Gigabyte DS3/Asus P5B

That will net you 3.2ghz. (400x8)

Get a E6600 + 2Gb PC6400 + Gigabyte DS3/Asus P5B

That will net you 3.6ghz if you get a good chip (400x9)

CR.

I wouldn't say it smashes everything Concorde.

Games for Example at 1280 x 1024 for me are not worth getting Core 2 Duo for.

Last time i checked it would only give me 4-5 fps more ?

Yeah but as said above, it he's starting from scratch, Conroe would be better bang for buck. Besides, you have a decent enough system so you don't need to upgade :D

You have a dig at what i said and then tell him to get Conroe anyway!! Whats that all about?

The simple thing i was trying to say is that there simply is no competition. C2D wins every time and there is absolutely no reason to build an AMD pc over a C2D if you are building from scratch.

Well thats because you already have a decent chip.

I had a 50% boost going from a X2 2.5 to a 3.6ghz C2D at 1600x1200 with a X1900XTX

Because i am fed up with people presuming someone is going to overclock.

I disagree with that last statement but that is not for here and is well discussed elsewhere if you search.

Erm, what forum is this? What's it called?

Ermmm if you hadn't noticed, the forum is named after a SHOP. If the shop changed names, the forum probably would too.
The name has no bearing on the forum. There is a separate section called "Overclocking" if you want to assume people will.
Not everyone on this forum wants to overclock, so don't assume it.

Go Conroe. I'm very happy with the setup in my signature but I only bought it because I'd done a lot of research leading up to it. In retrospect, I wish I'd gone Conroe because it IS definitely faster than AMDs current offerings.

if he wants to build a system using AM2 then it's up to him. I had god know's how many people telling me a few months back to abandon AM2 & go onto C2D, I went my way with AM2, and the system does what I want, just becasue Intel have the upper hand atm everyone is saying to drop AMD. If you want to use AM2 for the 5000, then my advice will be go for it.
