My friend has a Shuttle system based on the amd 64 X2 dual core 4600+ processor and is looking to transfer into a tower case and upgrading as he only has 1Gig of ram and a GeForce 7300 GS, hard drive space isnt really an issue as has a decent 1Tb drive.... He isnt a gamer by any means and mainly uses his system as a media system, playing music and the like, he has expressed interest in a HD sound capable card if its possible.

He has a budget of £500

Any help would be great....

Couldn't he just stick some more ram in the comp? If it's mainly used for media I don't think he'll see any benefit of upgrading the rest.

I suggested that, however he hates it being a shuttle and wants to crank out as much as he can from the system.....

which socket x2 4600+?

Personally though as it's more for media I would probably just go with upgrade to 4GB ram and get an ATI HD 4 or 5 series gpu assuming theres a pcie slot as it has the option of hd sound over hdmi and also supports gpu accelerated h264 etc. Also keeps the benefit of the small case.

I dont know what socket, as im not with him at the moment, he cant even tell me what board he has....

the reason I ask is if it's an am2 then he could possibly upgrade to a quad am2 chip, if it's earlier than that it's a new system from scratch basically.

He said after being told by someone else that it is an "AM-thingy I think he said" Not the most helpfull of answers...
