is the 7990 best left at stock speed or overclocked via Amd Catalyst,
i've only got a 750 corsair on my other rig so i guess that i cant go too crazy

also does the Corsair CS750M have the right plug connections for this card, i think it's twice what my 7970 has ????

I'd run it at stock clocks and under volt it a bit to keep noise and temps down. However the first rule of owning a 7990 which is essential is flash the card to use my custom bios and rid the card of continuous throttling. See the guide here.

wow that looks way too complicated, i'm not sure about all of that, it looks too scary

ok i'll print that off, thanks for the effort you put in Matt
i want this card to run lazy as i'm only on 1080p.........but then again;) well you know how it goes..;)

what about the R9 290X ????? Yes, but the 7990 was too cheap to ignore ;)
less that the 290X

If you don't flash the bios then the card will throttle and performance will suffer a bit, but the choice is yours. Even with 20% power tune and the stock bios undervolted i still found it throttled on any sort of intense load.

If you follow the guide, you can't really go wrong. :)

ok m8, i've just printed it off

the 7990 card arrived today...........GREAT !!!

EXCEPT.........the brand new corsair 750w blew straight away, not even with a card inside the rig !!!.........it cost 25 quid to send it back to here

so fed up right now

+1 for LtMatt's advice. I did exactly what he suggested.

Did try overclocking the card and it doesn't overclock much at all, probably not worth it in my opinion, I kept mine at stock and undervolted to 1125Mhz.

i wont overclock because i'm only running a 750w psu, but i can still stop it throttling back, so i'll still try Matt's download

i doubt i'll get a replacement psu until friday...........unless i use the 1000 w one from my new rig

i can afford it, but i cant cancel the corsair CS750M RMA until they have the broken PSU in their hands..so maybe later tomorrow

that Corsair doesn't have the build quality of the BE-QUIET, the BE QUIET looks far superior... it also has better packaging as well .

Just looked online, yea that psu has quite a few faults

i'm using the 1000w Be-Quiet, it's brilliant, dead quiet, dead lazy, just perfect... it's much bigger than the Corsair though

i'll get another one for the rig in my signature, i'll get a refund on the Corsair and order another Be- Quiet.

According to some posts lately matt you absolutely do not need all that wattage, especially on single GPU. ;)

I returned my one too, one core used to run 10c+ hotter than the other and had big coil whine -was great for mining though. The XFX 750w black edition was the weak link having to send that back later, the modular connections were not that good.

this bothers me, the 7990 has quite a few faults  loads of RMAs going on right now...well at least it still has its guarantee

It's easy to drop the temps, you just remove the cooler and use that Liquid Pro CPU thermal paste instead, i've dont that on my 7970, the temps drop a long way, it's about 15 degrees cooler...:eek:

but the trouble is they'll know that you've removed the cooler , because the Anodised screws will mark as you remove it and this card has loads of them..... the 7970 only has 4 stainless screws.

it is only safe to improve its cooling once the Guarantee has run out, you can also get better fans for it on Ebay.

the temps will also drop with normal cpu thermal paste as well, because you only have to see the mess that's there when the cooler is removed to realise it's badly applied !!!! the biggest problem we have with reliability issues is that all of this stuff is made in China...

i cant get Crossfire in this Cooler Master rig, it's too cramped, plus the 7990 is actually quite small, it's over an inch longer yes, but the cooler is nowhere near as bulky as the Sapphire Dual X, the 7970 is fat, but the 7990 is slim and long....almost elegent !!!! :)

mind you, with that metal reinforced back plate it's pretty heavy, the far end will need supporting.

no no no...........i sent overclockers 3 emails, i spoke to them yesterday about a refund on my RMAd corsair 750, the details are there on the screen but :-

THEY'VE SENT ME ANOTHER CORSAIR, THE SAME PSU

i cant believe how stupid they are :mad:

right getting back to this 7990 bios, i have a few questions:-

1.... my CPU is an i5 2500, ( for this other rig) this has to overclocked to 4.6, if not it'll bottleneck ????.....i love this cpu so i aint going to upgrade it...sorry ;)

2......cant i adjust the 7990 via AMD Catalyst..... because it handles the 7970 ok ?

3.....i'm only on 1080p 60hz tv

4.....the lower front case fan ????? what rpm/cfm do i need....because 1000rpm seems too low, but at least it's blasting straight under the card... i dont think the upper case fan is any good either, because these are both controlled automatically by the mobo bios, i cant speed them up manually, there is no adjustment of fan speed :- Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77

4. Download this and install Ai Suite with Fan Xpert 2 (or just FX2 if you already have AI Suite).
It's not officially supported on your mobo, but I can confirm that it's 100% compatible and will give you manual and auto control over 3pin/4pin fans on most headers.
Strangely enough, the V-LX is much better for FX2 than my current Z77 sabertooth, which is **** in comparison

thanks, but the lower fans will need cable extensions anyway because they dont reach the MOBO

You will not get a refund for RMA unless they are out of stock and there is nothing available as a replacement. This is normal business practice.

they've just refunded me, but they still need to collect the PSU, because i refuse to send it back to them.

It was/is a cracking card to be fair - it just needed water cooling from the start.

AMD are one generation away from perfection, but i expect they've sussed it out already with the watercooled 295x2...........but this card is way too expensive right now

the dual card seems a much better idea anyway, because you're packing far more punch into basically the same area.... the card is also better constructed than the 7970. 3 years ago dual cards were rubbish but not now, but to get a really good bargain on ebay for a 295X2 means that you'll have to wait until next year.

There's next years R9 Dual card to think about as well, but my guess is this one will be pretty expensive with its new Architecture.... whatever they end up doing

Ah well, I'm sure it'll come in useful one day :)

the corsair fans reach the mobo !!! but they're rubbish fans they have no power at all..... i'm using the far superior Xigmateks but these have very short leads.

i'm getting a fan controller tomorrow..........you could never use the Corsairs to feed air to the 7990, you need something with over 70cfm and far more directional, i also have the bigger 140mm corsairs on my next rig, they'll have to be replaced too, i've just ordered those yellow bladed Akasa to replace them.

cant get 7990 started, pc wont recognise card....pc will only start via onboard graphics..... the card is in there now , but it's disconnected

when it was connected black screen only...but the fans were spinning

7970 used to do the same too, it's an asus p8z77, I need help real quick thanks

do I download the drivers

I would appreciate more help please, i'm pretty stressed out right now

motherboard is giving me one red light at start up, it's lasting about 3 seconds

7970 isn't working either...fans ok, i moved to different plug on PSU, the same, PSU is ok because fans still spinning.....cards not working on the other slot either

i think its a bios issue with motherboard.....i also could not install amd catalyst, installation failed !!!

it's very hard to post in.... dreadful spam on pages/ passwords not remembered/ website downloads interupted by adverts

pc will go to shop tomorrow, i cant handle all of this right now
