I know with the new haswell I need to purchase a new psu due to the 12v psu cable that is now 8 pin. But do i need to purchase a new psu if i go AMD 8530?

I was thinking of this motherboard with amd 8530 instead of the haswell because its a lot cheaper and I don't have a lot of money at the moment and benchmarks show the 8530 is better than a i5 4670k?

What psu do you have?

Haswell doesnt need a new psu, only if your is of poor quality and maybe so old its lacking certain connectors do you.

On my ddr2 motherboard the long motherboard powerconnector required one of the 4 pin connectors to connect to the longer connector. Is that now moved to the 12v connector. Maybe it has an additional 4pin on top of the other 4pin that i have overlooked.

The 20+4pin which makes a 24pin for modern boards is totally seperate.

It should have another cable with two 4pin connectors.

Have a good look.

Quick run down on my latest AMDs

HEX 3.2 + 970 Mobo - 4 pin connector.

8320 in the 970 Mobo did not run well. I posted on OCUK and was told to get a 990 Mobo, plus the 8 pin instead of the 4 pin connector for the 8 core AMDs is better.

So, I robbed a 990 Mobo off a mate but the 8320 was no better ?

I then bought an 8350 but again, its was no different.

I did some more tests, comparing the 970 and the 990 Mobo with both the 8230 and the 8350 and found that apart from the obvious speed differences of the CPU, there was absolutely zero difference in the boards. Both boards are gigabyte.

I then bought another 8350 but this time I splashed out on a sabretooth mobo

Again absolutely no difference from the £50 970 Mobo in terms of performance or stability.

So, does the CPU benefit from 8 over 4 ? Well, surely it must do, but I have not noticed it.

You can get small adapters that turn a 4 pin plug into an 8 pin one you know. Not the most perfect solution, but a solution none the less.
