Is there any real reason to pay the extra money for the 9850X3D?

Marginal frequency bump, but some say it uses a fair bit more power too.

It's slightly faster and uses slightly more power than the 9800x3D for an extra 15 quid.

If I was choosing between them today I'd get the 9850X3D, but it wasn't enough to bother trading up from my 9800X3D

I went through a couple a few months ago. Not a big enough sample size but I suspect they are saving all the good bins for the 9850s and leaving the rejects to 9800s.

9850X3D potentially less affected by whatever the issue is killing 9000 series CPUs primarily 9800X3Ds though jury out as to whether it makes a difference or just less reports due to not so many 9850X3Ds sold.

If you want to do any ram overlocking the 9850x3d is believed to have better binned IMCs too.
Edit: nope I’m wrong although the 9850x3d can reach higher Infinity Fabric clocks more consistently. But the IMCs are generally the same.

Few percent more performance. I'd only pay if it cost a few percent more. Otherwise the 9800 is better value for 98% of the performance for 90-95% of the cost.

Edit: checking prices, it seems the 9850 has done down in price but the 9800 has gone up.

Not sure if there is any evidence to back that up. If you have any, please share it.
Nope I’m wrong. I must have misremembered something. I retract my statement about the IMC.
I could have sworn it was better for Ram overclocking though. Maybe the infinity fabric has higher rates of stability at 2200-2233 FCLK?
@LtMatt you’re the most experienced Ram OCer I know here, is the 9850x3d better for ram overlocking in your attempts?

No, exactly the same as the 9800X3D et al. It does have binned CPU cores though and it is easier to hit higher clock frequencies vs the 9800X3D when manual overclocking.

I just had the same choice to make this week... it was a marginal difference in cost so went for the better/newer one :)

I tend to spec the 9800X3D over the 9850X3D because the performance difference between the two is very minor, but for the sake of £10-15 there's no harm in buying the higher end chip.

As mentioned by @Rroff there's a chance they've lesser failure rates due to being higher binned chips, but that's pure speculation and I wouldn't be concerned either way.

If not paired up with an ASRock board then chances of an issue are minimal but so far the 9850X3D isn't tracking like the 9800X3D for user reports consistent with the common failure issue, though there are 1-2 reports so likely it isn't entirely fixed with it.

Is it only ASrock boards that are an issue?
I was planning on using an Asus B850 TUF motherboard for this build.

Not just ASRock though the vast majority of failures have been with their boards, Asus are the next worst for it - enough they've initiated a review of the situation https://press.asus.com/news/stateme...motherboard-and-amd-ryzen-9800-x3-d-concerns/

I would highly recommend going with MSI or Gigabyte if buying a 9000 series CPU especially X3D variants - as things stand it is very rare to encounter these failures on their boards though a tiny number of instances have been reported. Overall these failures are happening to a fairly low number of people but enough we are up to around 6-7 reports on these forums alone so not negligible either.

This was the last round up of user reports consistent with these failures https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/comments/1q3ff0t/9000series_cpu_failures_deaths_megathread_4/ but that is a bit out of date now - numbers at this point are around 3 times higher.

Some Asus boards are affected as well, never heard of any issues on Gigabyte tho.

I can't remember the exact numbers but I saw one of the people who has been doing the Reddit study things on it quoting something like 78% ASRock, 20% Asus and around 2-3% each for Gigabyte and MSI out of the reports they've had submitted which are consistent with this failure.

Personally, I would avoid Asrock as I have one system on Asus and a second on Gigabyte for a while, and everything is ok so far.
