I want to buy an AM2 6400 CPU. I don't overclock so would it be worth me staying with this CPU or going over to an intel CPU? Remember now, I don't overclock

I have yet to buy a mobo (mATX) or ram

I don't know enough about them? Is it faster than the AM2? Cooler?

Is this the one:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM

What mATX mobo should i get with it and what ram?

Still, not sure what to get. I quite like the idea of a quad core but don't know enough about Intel as i have always been an AMD man!

I am not into overclocking but this Intel Q6600 would still be better than the AM2 6400 even at stock?

Thing is, that mobo you suggested does not have DVI. I do have a PCIe card but i would have liked a DVI onboard just in case. Is there another good board that had DVI onboard or should i just not worry about that and put my 7600 GT PCIe card in?

I think i will go for the Gigabyte board and stick my 7600 GT in it. Would be better all round anyway?

This is the ram i was thinking of getting:

2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12

So, to sum it up, these 3 would go together and are the best buy:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM

Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12

I already have a Thermalright S1-128SE Heatsink.

Thanks easyrider. You are a font of information. Cheers mate.

It would be a big step for me to go from AMD to Intel and when you see 3.2 on an AMD and then a 2.4 on the Intel you think, gee, the Intel is slower!! I know that is wrong though. The Intel would eat the 3.2 AMD?

I bet someone will come on here now and say the AMD is a better buy!!

One last thing, does that Intel run cool?

The AMD route is very tempting as the prices are much better. Surely an:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail

Would be just as quick as the Intel mentioned? Especially as i don't overclock plus if i get the right mobo, wouldn't i be able to upgrade to the newer AMD's that will be coming out?

Gee, such a minefield for me guys!!

I have a few options then:

1. Buy the new Q6600, Gigabyte board and corsair ram

2. Buy a E6750, Gigabyte board and corsair ram (Upgrade CPU when new ones come out?)

3. Buy an AMD AM2 6400, Asus Mobo, Corsair ram

Which route? Is the 2nd one still better than the 3rd option?

I am in a fog when it comes to Intel facts guys as i have used AMD for years!! Thanks for all help and please keep your advise coming. Need more info before i spend!!

Cheers guys.

As for the graphics card, i already own a 7600 GT 256mb PCIe card and don't look to change it just yet.

No, i am not planning to overclock the CPU but i may consider it in time.

I want a system that can run fast now with the potential to be upgraded in the near future.

Price range is around the max £250 ish. Or there abouts.

I already have the PSU, Corsair 520w, DVDrw, TJ08 Case, Hard drive.

Got to decide now if its AMD or Intel. Yes, i will be playing some games and i will be using the pc for Surfing, general pc stuff etc etc.

Right guys, its between these 2 then:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail

Which should i go for?

Would i be better off going for the Intel and clocking it slightly to get a better clock than the AMD or would the AMD be a better CPU( Can that be clocked?).

I have to take into consideration heat too as the case i have is a mATX one but has good cooling.

Is it a better idea to buy the E6750 now and then have a motherboard that is ready for a newer chip or get the AMD?

Is the E6750 a better CPU at stock than the AMD at stock?

Help!!!

Thanks. Just confused at the different clock speeds. The AMD 6400 clock looks nice but you say the E6750 is still faster even at stock?

Not sure if a quad is the way to go. Then again it is only about £30 more than the E6750!! Lots of people have said in other posts that the quad is not worth it as it won't be noticeable or it won't be used for months and months with gaming etc.

E6750, Q6600, AMD6400!!!!! Aaaaaaaaghhhhh, Nightmare decision time for me!!

I quite like the idea of going over to Intel but i have also read that it is slower in windows!! Surely not?

How much can the q6600 be clocked to and what temps would i expect to see? I am used to having a very cool CPU!!

Please keep the advice / views coming as i need to decide very soon!! Thanks
