Hi,

I'm looking to swap out a faulty motherboard from a desktop PC belonging to a relative. Its an HP 5200UK type and has an M2N68-LA (Narra6) motherboard with an Athlon II X2 220 CPU sat in it. Looking at inexpensive replacement boards and I'm getting a little confused. Does the board need to specifically be an AM3 type or can I use a board listed as an AM3+? Some boards I've looked at are listed as 'AM3+' but in the specifications they list the Athlon II X2 as one of the CPU types which will fit?

Any advice appreciated, I've not dealth with AMD kit for years, its usually Intel stuff I deal with so my knowledge of the subject is a bit rusty to say the least!

If I remember right AM3+ is backwards compatible with AM3 cpu's. When you decide on a board go to the manufacturers website, find the board and check the cpu support list to double check compatibility.

AM3 CPUs will work on an AM3+ board, but do check the CPU support list. As it's only an Athlon II, you should get away with any AM3/AM3+ board that is the right size i.e. m-ATX.

Thanks chaps. Seems like there are plenty of AM3+ boards out there which are happy with an AM3 being fitted. I'll have a look and see whats on offer, looking to spend about £30-£40 as the PC in question only sees light use.

AM3 CPUs will work in an AM3+ board, but an AM3+ chip (FX series) won't work in an AM3 board.

This board will work and is m-ATX like the HP board you're replacing:

Unfortunately, it's the only m-ATX board OCUK have. Competitors may have a wider selection.

As a side note, an AM3 CPU will also work in an AM2+ board. I've got an Athlon II X4 640 in an old Asrock AM2+ board kicking around somewhere!
