AMD APU on Linux?

I'm thinking of building a small home network server for backups, firewall and DHCP and was considering getting an AMD APU as they are nice and cheap and have integrated graphics. I'm just slightly concerned about the drivers for them.

Does anyone know if they work well with open source drivers or do you need to use AMD drivers? Has anyone had any problems with one running on Linux? Obviously as it is a server I won't be needing graphics except for the initial system install but I'd like to know they work if required in the future.

Any help is appreciated :).

It depends on which kernal you are using I believe. Which distro/kernal will you be using?

I've seen a few people say that they had problems with many distros/kernals, although
certain kernals seem to have a fix in them.

Best bet is to do some research regarding the specific GPU/distro/kernal which you are going to be
using.

I dare say most things should work fine with some tweaking.

If all you are doing is DHCP, Firewalling and backups (i wouldnt advise having backups on a firewall btw) You shouldnt need to install the AMD/ATi drivers, but from what I remember with my old amd laptop, once you have the drivers working they are pretty stable. I will be setting up my old AMD desktop once my new one is built to linux again, so will hopefully be able to let you know in a few weeks if you can wait that long.

Still for a headless dhcp/firewall you should be ok, and by the time you want to use Xwindows on it, they likely would have sorted all the driver issues out.

Thanks for the info. Looks like an APU would be a good bet. You can't really complain about getting a half decent server for £400 (most of which is caused by the hard drives).

I'm not too concerned with this. I'll be encrypting the backups anyway and they are not absolutely mission critical anyway. Mainly just photos.
